About China Gourmet

China Gourmet is a Chinese restaurant located at 2842 St Vincent St in Philadelphia. They can be contacted at (215) 941-1898 or +1 215-941-1898.

One family who visited for a lunar year dinner had a positive experience with the food, particularly noting the freshness of the seafood. The king crab was described as succulent, perfectly cooked, and flavorful, prepared in three ways: steamed with garlic, fried with egg yolk, and as fried rice. The fried eel was also highly recommended for its flavor and perfect crispiness. A rare traditional Chinese delicacy, Buddhist Jumping Over the Wall Soup, was also enjoyed for its collagen content and delicious seafood.

Another reviewer provided a more detailed breakdown of specific dishes, categorizing the seafood stir fry, mixed veggies with lotus root, and fried rice as good. The Peking duck and spare ribs with pineapple were considered okay, while the seafood in fried noodle basket was rated as mediocre. Dishes like lo mein, mushrooms and sea cucumber, and mixed veggies with water chestnut were deemed to be poor.

The service at China Gourmet received negative feedback from one reviewer, who stated they would give negative ratings if possible. Another review strongly advised against hosting events at the restaurant, especially if guests have dietary restrictions.

Regarding dietary needs, one customer recounted a severely negative experience with the restaurant's handling of allergies, including confusing allergens with vegetarianism and giving unsafe advice to individuals with severe (even airborne) allergies. They reported a significant struggle to get a single accommodating dish prepared due to the perceived inconvenience to the staff.

Another diner found a couple of dishes decent but most to be average, with some being under-seasoned. The lo mein was specifically criticized for being soggy and flavorless.

On a positive note, the restaurant's decor was described as nice. It is also noted that China Gourmet is a BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) establishment.

In summary, while China Gourmet offers some highly praised dishes, particularly its fresh seafood, there are significant concerns raised about the service and the restaurant's ability to handle dietary restrictions and maintain consistent food quality across its menu.

Our family went for our lunar year dinner. Everything was delicious, all the seafood was so fresh. The king crab was absolutely succulent, cooked to perfection with a delicate sweetness and rich, buttery flavor that melted in your mouth. We had three different ways to prepare it. Steamed with garlic, fried with egg yolk, and fried rice. The fried eel was fried to perfection and filled with flavor. (Definitely a must try!) Buddhist Jumping Over the Wall Soup is an traditional Chinese delicacy, rare to find!!!. Packed full of collagen and delicious seafood!

Good: seafood stir fry, mixed veggies with lotus root, fried rice Ok: Peking duck, spare ribs with pineapple Meh: seafood in fried noodle basket Pass: lo mein, mushrooms and sea cucumber, mixed veggies with water chestnut. Rating is for food only. I would give the service negatives if it was possible. No recommendations here. Do not host an event here if anyone has any dietary restrictions. Place is BYOB. We came here for the traditional family style dinner. They did an atrocious job with dietary restrictions confusing allergens with vegetarian. They advised someone with severe (airborne) allergies just to "not eat" the allergen, and advised another person after they had declared a severe allergy to "just try a little". We had to go back and forth with the staff for over an hour before they agreed to make a (singular one) dish to accommodate someone with multiple allergies because it was "just too much to deal with". A couple of decent dishes but most were mid with a few being terribly under seasoned. The lo mein in particular was so soggy and flavorless. Place is decorated nicely.

Been recommended this place by a few Chinese friends, got to check it out and impressed on how good the food is! We got Dimsum experience with carts just as authentic as a Cantonese breakfast could be. Basically the carts will stop at your table and you got to pick whatever you want, the dishes you take would be marked on your card for payment later. Very busy in the weekend, could be a wait for your seating but they manage well enough. Because of the crowd, services are not as attentive as other restaurants - as expected for most casual Asian food. Highly recommend the pineapple custard baked bun. I will definitely come back and check out food here other than just dim sum, reasonable price and tasty food.

Don't need to go downtown if the food is exactly the same in the NE. The local Asian community goes here all the time, that's all you really need to know... And the parking is free

We went for the Chinese new year and it was busy! However they kept the food coming. A couple of times we had to ask them to hold off or slow down, but that’s because we were talking a lot! Atmosphere is a little loud, but food was authentic and delicious! I liked everything that included shrimp, honestly I was not sure what I was eating. Many of the items are sweet. For a true dim sum experience- this is the place to go!
