About China gourmet

China Gourmet, located at 1575 N Lacrosse St B, Rapid City, SD 57701, USA, is a Chinese restaurant that aims to cater to the local community with a diverse menu and convenient services. Operating with the phone numbers (605) 791-1088 and +1 605-791-1088, China Gourmet presents itself as an unfussy establishment offering an extensive array of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes, including lunch specials. Customer experiences, however, reflect a mixed bag, highlighting both positive aspects of their traditional offerings and significant concerns about the quality of some specific dishes and the dining amenities.

Environment and Atmosphere

The atmosphere at China Gourmet appears to be that of a straightforward, local Chinese eatery, prioritizing functionality over elaborate decor. One customer review explicitly stated, "The furnishings were dated, and they used plastic silverware and styrofoam plates, but it was clean and the food was good." This indicates that while the aesthetic might not be modern or upscale, the restaurant maintains a basic level of cleanliness. The use of disposable cutlery and plates suggests a focus on quick service and efficiency, common in fast-casual or takeout-oriented establishments, potentially to manage operational costs or accommodate a high volume of customers. Despite these aspects, some external information mentions that the restaurant has been "dedicated to offering the most memorable dining experience" and focuses on a "cozy and inviting ambiance where you could enjoy not only the great meal but also the authentic atmosphere." This disparity between customer observations and promotional language suggests that while the intention might be to provide a certain ambiance, the actual experience can vary and lean towards a more casual, no-frills setting. The environment is likely suitable for a quick meal or a casual gathering rather than a formal dining occasion.

Services Offered

China Gourmet offers a range of services designed to provide convenience to its customers. The primary services include both dine-in and takeout options. For those who choose to dine in, the restaurant provides a place to sit and enjoy their meal, albeit with the noted use of plastic silverware and styrofoam plates. The availability of takeout is a significant feature, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite dishes from the comfort of their homes. This is particularly appealing for busy individuals or families. China Gourmet also facilitates online ordering through its website and third-party platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash, offering both pickup and delivery services. This digital accessibility streamlines the ordering process and expands their reach to customers who prefer to order remotely. Delivery times are generally estimated between 30 to 40 minutes for online orders, indicating a commitment to relatively quick service. Additionally, the restaurant sells gift cards, allowing patrons to share the China Gourmet experience with others. They also offer "Family Dinner" options on their menu, catering to larger groups or special occasions, although it's noted these "cannot be combined with any other offer."

Features and Menu Highlights

China Gourmet boasts an extensive menu that goes beyond typical Chinese fare, incorporating elements of Japanese and Thai cuisine, making it an "Asian Fusion" spot for some. This broad selection is a key feature, aiming to cater to a wider array of tastes. One highly positive highlight from customer reviews is the Egg Foo Young. A customer enthusiastically noted, "I haven’t been able to find what I call good egg foo young in town... Found it!" This indicates that for those seeking this specific traditional dish, China Gourmet might be a standout. The review also mentioned that the "Food was good. Portions were huge," suggesting generous serving sizes which offer good value for money.

The menu includes classic Chinese categories such as Appetizers, Soup, Fried Rice, Chow Mein, Lo Mein, Chow Mei Fun, Pork, Seafood, Chicken, Beef, Combination Platters, Chef's Specialties, Moo Shu, and Vegetable dishes. Popular items listed on online menus include Egg Roll, Crab Rangoon, Teriyaki Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Beef with Broccoli, Sesame Chicken, and Sweet & Sour Chicken. Beyond Chinese, the menu also features Japanese Noodles (Udon), Sushi, and "Thai Menu" options, such as Pad Thai and Panang Curry, as seen in some online descriptions, further solidifying its diverse offerings.

However, there's a strong contrasting review regarding the quality of specific dishes. A customer's experience with Orange Beef was severely negative, describing the meat as "breaded and fried which I've never seen before," the sauce as "thick and gross, reaked of cheap mall Chinese," and the overall dish as "certainly not fresh ingredients prepared from scratch food." This stark difference in feedback highlights potential inconsistencies in food preparation or ingredient quality across different menu items, or possibly a preference for a more specific style of Chinese cuisine that some dishes may not meet. While some customers find their "authentic Chinese cuisine" to be delicious, others might experience disappointment with certain preparations.

Promotional Information and Customer Experience

China Gourmet's promotional efforts appear to be primarily centered around its wide menu and convenience, including online ordering, pickup, and delivery services. The offering of "lunch specials" and "Family Dinner" options caters to different dining needs and budgets. The gift card option also serves as a promotional tool, encouraging sharing of the dining experience. The restaurant's official descriptions emphasize using "freshest and natural ones to prepare every dish" and cooking them in a "healthier way," aiming to project an image of quality and care.

Customer experiences, as reflected in the reviews, paint a varied picture. The positive feedback on the Egg Foo Young and the generous portion sizes ("Portions were huge") are significant informal promotions, suggesting that the restaurant delivers on value and taste for specific dishes. The positive comments about the cleanliness, despite dated furnishings, also contribute to a generally acceptable dining environment. However, the highly critical review of the Orange Beef serves as a cautionary note, indicating that while some dishes may excel, others might fall short of expectations, particularly for those looking for more authentic or freshly prepared items. This mixed customer feedback suggests that while China Gourmet has its strong suits and loyal patrons, there are areas where consistency in food quality might vary, leading to a polarizing dining experience for some. The restaurant's challenge lies in consistently delivering on its promise of "gourmet" quality across its extensive menu to satisfy all patrons.

I haven’t been able to find what I call good egg foo young in town. Everyone has their version, and I was looking for one similar to my memory. Found it! Food was good. Portions were huge. The furnishings were dated, and they used plastic silverware and styrofoam plates, but it was clean and the food was good.

I had an orange beef. My food was ready almost immediately, my meat was breaded and fried which I've never seen before, and it came with little beef and garnished with brocollis. The sauce was thick and gross, reaked of cheap mall Chinese. It seemed like something I'd buy at a supermarket frozen section and microwave, it was certainly not fresh ingredients prepared from scratch food, and I left my food on the table and promptly left.

It’s not Covid any longer, why are we getting our food on flimsy paper plates with the cheapest plastic forks you can buy? Canned beverages Average (at best) food, the California roll was gross, chicken lo mein is bland. Crab rangoons would be good if not a bit undercooked. If you’re going to cut corners on dishes, at least try to invest more in the food quality. Service was fine though, sadly I won’t be back.
