About China Chef

China Chef, situated at 623 Pearl St in La Jolla, California, is a Chinese Restaurant catering to both locals and visitors. Recent customer reviews present a varied picture of the dining experience offered here.

One reviewer described China Chef as a "wonderful, quaint place" with "fresh delicious food." They particularly enjoyed the Fried Dumplings, House Fried Rice, and Lemon Chicken, noting the significant flavor and generous portions, which they found sufficient for two to three people. This positive experience suggests that some dishes at China Chef are well-received for their taste and portion size. The reviewer also mentioned the restaurant's convenient location, being a short walk from a favorite hotel, indicating its accessibility for tourists.

However, another customer had a significantly different experience. They found the food to be "edible but totally bland and eminently forgettable," despite being abundant. Specific criticisms included dry and tasteless, though crispy, egg rolls (with the crust being the best part), and shrimp fried rice that lacked seasoning, requiring substantial additions of soy sauce or sweet and sour sauce for any flavor, although it did contain a good amount of shrimp. Furthermore, their order of "spicy" Kung Pao shrimp was reported to have minimal peppers and a complete lack of spiciness. This highly negative review led the customer to conclude that they would not return due to the perceived blandness of the food.

In summary, reviews for China Chef in La Jolla are contrasting. While one customer praised the fresh and flavorful dishes with generous portions, another found the food to be bland and lacking in taste. Potential customers may want to consider these differing opinions when deciding whether to dine at China Chef. For inquiries or orders, they can be contacted at (858) 454-1368 or +1 858-454-1368.

Wonderful, quaint place with fresh delicious food! We shared the Fried Dumplings, House Fried Rice and Lemon Chicken. Lots of flavor, generous portions just enough for two (maybe 3 but we were hungry... hahaha) Definitely will be back when in La Jolla... just a short walk from our favorite hotel too.

The food is edible but totally bland and eminently forgettable, if abundant. We ordered egg rolls that were dry and tasteless, but crispy. The crust was the best part. We also ordered shrimp fried rice, which lacked seasoning and required generous applications of soy sauce or sweet and sour sauce for any flavor at all, but had a goodly number of shrimp. Our "spicy" Kung Pao shrimp had a few peppers in it, but totally lacked spiciness. We won't return. Bland, bland, bland.

This restuarant has been here for decades now. Been on the front page of the union tribute in 1996. The food is great honestly my Chinese Grandfather would've loved it. The style, is traditional, waitresses are very servicable. I loved it ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

1st order here. Ordered General TAo's Chicken. They asked if I wanted it with vegetables or deep fried. Chose deep fried. Dish is in general described/known as a crisp breaded chicken pieces in a sweet tangy sauce. The dish I received was total MUSH breaded chicken, not AT ALL crispy, and nor any sense of 'sweet' with the tangy. Mine order being the 'deep fried', I can not fathom stomaching the MUSH breading that would suround the non deep fried order. This dish being one of the 10-12 'Chef's Specialty' dish offerings - headlining the menu, it leaves very little confidence in what would be expected of the 30-40 other menu offerings - outside what they would consider outside their chef's specialties. Photo'd is roughly the portion remaining I won't eat.

Please start checking how cooked your boba is before you give to customers! The boba teas are a favorite but I have now had ones that have ranged from overcooked to completely undercooked. In the attached photo you can see just how undercooked my boba was (and I ate most of it), but for those who havenโ€™t ever eaten raw boba it is like eating balls of chalk - horrible.
