About China Cafe
China Cafe is a Chinese Restaurant situated within the bustling Grand Central Market at 317 S Broadway # 18 in Los Angeles. This eatery has become a local go-to spot, particularly known for their signature House Wonton.
The House Wonton at China Cafe is a standout dish, featuring eight large wontons served with BBQ pork, chicken, and bok choy in a flavorful broth. A unique aspect, highlighted by a frequent customer, is the addition of lime and avocado, a combination that enhances the taste experience. The portion size is generous, often providing enough for two smaller meals or one large serving.
China Cafe can get quite busy during lunchtime and on weekends, resulting in potential wait times. Customers suggest taking advantage of the location within Grand Central Market by exploring other vendors while your order is being prepared.
While one review notes that the food might not be life-changing and could be a "touch bland" for some palates, it is generally considered to be a well-sized portion at an acceptable price. The overall appeal seems to lie in the specific cravings for their unique style of wonton soup.
Service experiences appear to vary. Despite some reviews citing terrible service, one customer reported a welcoming and polite interaction, suggesting that service quality might be inconsistent or depend on the day.
Even with other Chinese food options available in Grand Central Market, China Cafe holds a special place for those who specifically crave their distinctive House Wonton. When that particular craving hits, it seems to be the preferred choice for many, regardless of whether other options might be perceived as having higher overall quality.

Customer Reviews
Mom's fav House wonton at China Cafe has become our go to place for the crave. I had never thought of putting lime on wonton or avocado till mom took me to eat here and it works! You get 8 big wontons along with bbq pork, chicken, bok choy, that you have 2 meals if you eat small (pic of mom making her 2) or 1 if really hungry. You also get that chili oil and lime so give it a try. Lunch time and weekends gets busy so the wait will be a while, so take a walk around Grand Central Market while your food is ready.
This food won't change your life. It was a well-sized portion at an acceptable price. The food itself was a touch bland, but nothing intolerable. I see a lot of reviews found the service terrible, but maybe I just caught them on a good day as I found them if not bright and friendly, at least welcoming and polite. While there are certainly better options in Grand Central, when the itch for this food hits, nothing else will hit the right way, regardless of quality.
Where else are you gonna get Chinese food served with a scowl and in plastic ware? No where. So drop what you’re doing and head over to China Cafe. I’ve recently started coming here to decompress after work. I usually order an appetizer and stay for the ambiance of the market. It’s relatively well-priced. Haven’t tried any other dishes, but if you’re looking to get out of the house or you’re getting off of work and want to hang out somewhere and enjoy the atmosphere, this place is it.
I like chinese foods. I tried chow mein and specials. Photo shows beef special, which I felt the beef was not so much and rice was plenty. But, considering the location, the price may become higher.
April 2024 My Kung Po Seafood with rice was fairly nice, although it was a bit too sweet for me. The quality of the squid was questionable. The complimentary soup on the side was good.
