About China Cafe

Welcome to China Cafe, your local Chinese restaurant situated at 20943 Point Lookout Rd in Callaway, Maryland. As a part of the Chinese restaurant category, China Cafe primarily operates as a takeout establishment, offering a convenient option for those in the Callaway area seeking classic Chinese-American cuisine. While primarily focused on takeout, China Cafe does provide a limited number of tables and chairs for customers who wish to dine in.

Located on Point Lookout Road, China Cafe aims to serve the local community with reasonably priced Chinese food options. For those experiencing a craving for inexpensive Chinese fare, China Cafe presents itself as a potential choice. However, it's important to note that recent customer feedback provides a mixed view of the overall experience, particularly concerning food quality and dine-in service.

One customer review highlighted a significant disappointment with the Sweet and Sour Shrimp dish, describing it as consisting mainly of batter with small, undercooked shrimp inside. This negative experience led the customer to not return to the establishment. This feedback suggests a potential inconsistency in the preparation or quality of certain menu items, and it is something prospective customers may want to consider.

In contrast, another customer found the pricing to be reasonable, especially considering current inflation, and acknowledged that China Cafe can satisfy a craving for inexpensive Chinese food. This suggests that for those prioritizing affordability, China Cafe might be a viable option, particularly for takeout.

However, the dine-in experience appears to be a point of concern based on recent feedback. One customer recounted a negative interaction when attempting to dine in with their young daughter. Despite the presence of disposable plastic cups readily visible, a staff member reportedly refused a request for tap water, stating that "we don't have cups" and insisting the available cups were only for soda. This interaction was perceived as unhelpful and frustrating, almost discouraging the customer from dining in. While the customer ultimately retrieved their own water and their daughter enjoyed the meal, the service received was described as "pretty crappy," leading to a low service rating and a recommendation for takeout only.

This incident suggests that while China Cafe does offer the option to eat in, the service provided to dine-in customers may not always be accommodating. It's possible that the establishment is primarily geared towards takeout orders, and dine-in requests might not be handled with the same level of attentiveness or convenience. The discrepancy between previous experiences of being offered water when dining in and the recent refusal also indicates potential inconsistencies in service standards.

As a Chinese restaurant, China Cafe likely offers a range of popular dishes common to this category, such as fried rice, various noodle dishes (like lo mein or chow mein), and a selection of meat and vegetable entrees prepared with different sauces and cooking styles. Given the mention of Sweet and Sour Shrimp, it can be inferred that the menu includes classic sweet and sour options, as well as seafood dishes. However, the specific variety and quality of these other offerings are not detailed in the provided reviews.

Based on the limited information available, it's challenging to provide a comprehensive overview of the environment of China Cafe. The mention of it being "primarily a takeout place" with "table/chairs for a small number of eating-in persons" suggests a functional but likely not elaborate dining area. The focus appears to be on efficiency for takeout orders rather than creating an extensive dine-in ambiance.

Regarding features, the primary feature of China Cafe seems to be its affordability and its role as a local takeout option for Chinese food in Callaway, MD. The limited dine-in availability could be considered a secondary feature, though the recent service experience suggests it might not be the most emphasized aspect of their service.

No specific promotional information was included in the provided data. It is common for Chinese restaurants to offer lunch specials, combination meals, or family-sized dishes, but whether China Cafe currently has any such promotions is unknown. Local residents interested in potential deals or discounts would need to contact the restaurant directly at (301) 994-9938 or +1 301-994-9938 to inquire.

In conclusion, China Cafe in Callaway, MD, serves primarily as a takeout Chinese restaurant offering reasonably priced food. While it does have limited seating for dine-in customers, recent feedback indicates potential issues with food quality on certain items and inconsistencies or unhelpful service for those choosing to eat at the premises. Customers seeking an inexpensive Chinese takeout option in the area may find China Cafe suitable, but those wishing to dine in should be aware of the potential for service-related frustrations based on recent experiences. It would be advisable for prospective customers to consider the recent reviews alongside their own priorities when deciding whether to patronize China Cafe.

The sweet and sour shrimp had baby shrimp and was all batter. It wasn't even done on the inside, just gross. Haven't returned since.

Disappointing. Pricing is reasonable (considering inflation) for what it is, and it hits the spot for the inexpensive Chinese food craving. My main issue was my most recent visit. I took my young daughter, and she wanted to eat in (it's primarily a takeout place, but does have table/chairs for a small number of eating-in persons). So I agreed (it was a daddy-daughter day date). I told them we'd be dining in, and asked for tap water. Man behind the counter didn't even try to hide is annoyance, and said, "we don't have cups." He then motioned to the refrigerator full of drinks. I motioned to the stacks of disposable plastic cups in clear view (the small, 4-5 oz ones). He said they were for sodas only. Really? Who uses a 4 oz cup with a can of soda? You really include those cups in to-go orders? He didn't like being caught in his lie, and stood by his bs explanation. Whatever. I went to my car and got a bottle of water for me and my daughter. I didn't want to go all Karen on him, or even deal with it. My daughter is young enough to not really have understood, and still enjoyed the meal. Pretty crappy how he handled it. Almost like he was intent on us not enjoying the meal there. For reference, I've been given water on request when eating in before. This guy was just ... having a day? IDK. But he was definitely not interested in letting anyone have a pleasant day around him. Not a zero, or even a one, but a frustrating two stars for the service. Get takeout here only, instead.

It was fast, but thats the only good part i think. Garlic sauce wasnt very spicy, and it was oddly very sweet. Veggies a bit on the undercooked side too.

The workers are polite. The food is cheap, with family deal options as well. But the food is GROSS 🤢🤮 And they know it. There are better chinese food options. Eat here only if you are starving. But A&W is like right there...
