About Chin's Szechwan - La Jolla

Chin's Szechwan - La Jolla, located at 623 Pearl St in La Jolla, California, brings the bold and spicy flavors of Szechwan cuisine to the local dining scene. Despite initial skepticism about finding a great Chinese spot in La Jolla, many customers have found Chin's to be a serious contender.

While one reviewer noted that the initial service for taking orders could be slow, the service improved significantly throughout the rest of the evening. The staff is described as warm and inviting, ensuring that diners have everything they need for a pleasant experience.

A variety of dishes have garnered positive feedback. The pan-fried pork potstickers were considered solid, though noted to be more doughy than some might prefer. The tangerine beef was described as a bit too fruit-forward in its glaze. Standout dishes included the Szechwan crispy pork (delicious), the ku ting shrimp (a hit), and the spicy honey & sesame chicken, which was the crowd favorite. Additionally, the crispy wontons and seafood fried rice were well-received by the table.

A notable feature of Chin's is the generous portion sizes, especially considering the small size of the dining space. One group of four diners took home at least half of three entrees, highlighting the abundance of food. The restaurant also offers a spicy scale from 1 to 5, with level 5 being genuinely hot, much to the satisfaction of spice enthusiasts. Their chicken wings are also mentioned as being delicious.

Be prepared for potential wait times, as Chin's Szechwan is a popular spot with a small dining area. Takeout orders may also experience delays. While the service might not be the fastest, customers generally agree that the quality of the food makes it worth the wait. If you are a local user in La Jolla looking for authentic and flavorful Szechwan cuisine with generous portions, Chin's Szechwan is a highly recommended option. I was skeptical about a "great" Chinese spot in La Jolla, but Chin's delivered in a serious way. The service was very slow to take our order, but once we got started, the service was great the rest of the night. The staff was warm and inviting, and they made sure we had everything we needed. We got the pan fried pork potstickers (solid - more dough-y than I prefer), tangerine beef (a little too fruit-forward with the glaze), Szechwan crispy pork (delicious), ku ting shrimp (a hit across the table) and spicy honey & sesame chicken (the crowd favorite of the night). Not pictured: crispy wontons and seafood fried rice (the table liked both). The space is small, but the portions are HUGE. Four of us were eating, and we took home at least half of three entrees. I'd love to return to try more savory dishes...and hopefully more veggies. Well done, Chin's!

Their food is great. Their spicy scale is 1 to 5 and the 5 is hot, I was not disappointed. Their chicken wings are delish. Be prepared to wait. It is a small dining area and very popular. take out order is a wait as well. They are not fast, but they hustle and it is worth it.

Came in for some wonton soup; was great. Ordered the chicken fried rice, was not a fan, when I mentioned it to the manager he immediately asked if I would like it off the bill or order something else. The garlic chicken I got instead, was very good.

Nice small spot to eat some healthy choices. We are vegetarian and we enjoyed our order. Nice spices used.. flavor was plenty. The female server is really nice and social.

Chin’s Szechwan: A Second-Chance Redemption Story! Sometimes, giving a place a second chance pays off big time, and Chin’s Szechwan just proved it to me. I’ll admit, my first visit years ago left me unimpressed—the dishes then didn’t live up to their potential, and I wasn’t in a rush to return. Fast-forward to now, and wow—what a turnaround! I ordered the Shanghai Crispy Pork and Fried Pork Wontons, and let me tell you, they were absolutely phenomenal. The crispy pork was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of crunch and flavor, while the wontons had that golden, satisfying crisp paired with a filling that was next-level delicious. If you’ve written Chin’s off in the past, it might be time to reconsider. Whatever they’ve done to improve has worked, and this meal was proof they’ve earned their reputation back. Pro tip: Always be open to second chances—you might just find your new favorite dishes waiting for you.
