About Chi Kong Look Funn Factory
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Honolulu's Chinatown, Chi Kong Look Funn Factory offers a unique and authentic experience for those seeking traditional Cantonese flavors. While categorized as a Chinese restaurant, Chi Kong Look Funn Factory distinguishes itself by primarily functioning as a producer of fresh rice rolls (Cheung fun) and noodles (Look fun), supplying these staples wholesale to other restaurants. However, it also opens its doors to the public, providing a rare opportunity to purchase these freshly made delicacies directly from the source.
Based on enthusiastic customer reviews, Chi Kong Look Funn Factory is considered a "hidden gem" within Chinatown. Unlike typical sit-down restaurants, this establishment focuses on the quality and freshness of its core products: the Cheung fun and the Look fun noodles. Customers consistently praise the authenticity and the old-fashioned methods used in their preparation, evoking a sense of traditional Cantonese culinary practices that might be harder to find elsewhere, even in other Chinatowns around the world.
The Cheung fun, or rice rolls, appear to be a standout item. Reviewers rave about the massive portions offered at an incredibly reasonable price, describing it as an "insane deal." The texture of the rice rolls is frequently highlighted as perfectly "bouncy," indicating a skillful preparation process. Chi Kong Look Funn Factory offers different variations of Cheung fun, including plain noodles that can be used to make soup noodles at home, as well as filled options like Char Siu (barbecue pork) and Ha Mi (shrimp). The fact that customers returned to purchase specific varieties like the Char Siu and Ha Mi Cheung fun underscores their deliciousness and appeal.
One reviewer recounted making soup noodles from the plain Look fun noodles purchased from the factory, emphasizing their incredible freshness and the way they held their shape, attributing this to the old-fashioned Cantonese preparation method. This suggests that the noodles themselves are of exceptional quality and can be a versatile ingredient for home cooking, allowing customers to create their own dishes with a truly fresh base.
The experience at Chi Kong Look Funn Factory is likened to visiting an old-fashioned dim sum restaurant in Asia, particularly in terms of the focus on freshly made staples. While the atmosphere might be more akin to a factory outlet than a traditional restaurant with extensive seating and ambiance, the emphasis is clearly on the quality and authenticity of the food. One reviewer noted that small packets of soy sauce were provided with the Cheung fun, suggesting that while it might be a more grab-and-go experience, the necessary condiments are available to enhance the flavors.
The popularity of Chi Kong Look Funn Factory is evident from a review mentioning that they were "very busy" and that most of their offerings were "sold out early morning." This high demand speaks to the quality and value of their products, indicating that locals and those in the know recognize this as a prime spot for fresh Cheung fun and noodles. The reviewer who tried the plain Look fun (the only option available at the time of their late morning visit) still found it to be "SO fresh and really really good, cheap," even without a dipping sauce. This speaks to the inherent flavor and quality of the noodles themselves.
It's important to note that based on the reviews, Chi Kong Look Funn Factory might not offer the full sit-down restaurant experience with an extensive menu and elaborate dining environment. Instead, it seems to focus on producing and selling high-quality, freshly made Cheung fun and Look fun noodles, primarily for takeout. This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to purchase these specific items for immediate consumption or to take home for later use.
In summary, Chi Kong Look Funn Factory in Honolulu's Chinatown is a unique establishment that serves as both a wholesale producer and a direct retailer of exceptionally fresh and authentic Cheung fun (rice rolls) and Look fun noodles. Praised for its massive portions at amazing prices, the bouncy texture of the rice rolls, and the old-fashioned preparation methods, it's considered a hidden gem for those seeking a genuine taste of Cantonese staples. While it might not offer a traditional restaurant setting, the focus on quality and authenticity makes it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience truly fresh, locally made Cheung fun and noodles in Honolulu. To ensure you get your desired items, especially given their tendency to sell out early, it might be wise to visit earlier in the day. TL;DR: This is a hidden gem in Chinatown! Authentic, old fashioned massive portion of Cheung fun for an amazing price! You won't be disappointed if you check it out! We stumbled on this place while checking out Chinatown in Oahu. This is not a restaurant, this is a Cheung fun factory, they make the fresh rice rolls wholesale for other restaurants! We made soup noodles out of their plain noodles (look fun) it was incredibly fresh and delicious. The noodles held their shape, they are made in the very old fashioned Cantonese way! We really appreciate the attention to authenticity, much better than all of the Chinatowns in other parts of the world that we have visited! We loved our first visit so much, we returned to buy 2 char siu and 1 ha mi Cheung fun! They are massive and for the price, it's an insane deal! They're tasty, they're fresh , they have the perfect bouncy texture! They did have small packets of soy sauce to eat with it as well! It's just like the old fashioned, dim sum restaurant in Asia. I don't think you can find this anywhere else! This is a hidden gem, and we hope they will continue to be here for a long time!
Walking and exploring around Chinatown Sunday morning, and I decided to get in and see what they were selling here...Wow they are very busy it should be good I thought, I must try something! They were noodles!! They were SO fresh and really really good, cheap and most of them were sold out early morning. I tried the Look Fun one, the only one available, no sauce to dip in like soy sauce or something, but I love it! I had to stop eating them...I was on my way to eat Chinese Dim Sum at Golden Palace.
The rice roll is fresh, tasty and MASSIVE for 3 dollars. We got the mushroom one and shared it between two people with a little soy sauce. There’s no seating, it’s a grab and go place.
Great look funn rolls, char siu, shrimp, mushroom, and plain. Price has gone up in recent years but their rolls are very large.
The best look funn. No seating or anything, just like it says it's where they make it.
