About Chengdu Taste
Located at 828 W Valley Blvd in Alhambra, California, Chengdu Taste offers an immersive experience into the vibrant and bold flavors of authentic Sichuan cuisine. As a distinguished Chinese restaurant specializing in the culinary traditions of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in China, this establishment has garnered significant praise for its commitment to providing a genuine taste of the region. Customer reviews consistently highlight the authenticity, quality, and generous portions of the dishes served at Chengdu Taste, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a true Sichuan culinary adventure.
One of the most prominent features of Chengdu Taste, as emphasized by multiple reviewers, is the authenticity of its Sichuan flavors. For those seeking a genuine taste of this renowned Chinese culinary tradition, Chengdu Taste appears to deliver exceptionally well. One reviewer, explicitly looking for an "authentic Sichuan experience," confirmed that they "definitely got it here." This speaks volumes about the restaurant's dedication to using traditional recipes and ingredients to recreate the true taste of Sichuanese cooking. For local users in Alhambra and the surrounding areas craving an authentic experience, Chengdu Taste stands out as a prime destination.
A recurring theme in the reviews is the significant level of spiciness inherent in the dishes. Sichuan cuisine is well-known for its bold and often fiery flavors, largely attributed to the liberal use of chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns. One reviewer strongly cautioned against ordering dishes "extra spicy," noting that they are "already sufficiently spicy thanks to the plethora of red chilis served with pretty much any dish." This is valuable advice for those who may be less accustomed to intense heat, suggesting that the standard spice levels at Chengdu Taste are already quite potent and reflective of authentic Sichuan cooking. Diners who appreciate a genuine spicy kick will likely find the flavors here to be exceptionally satisfying.
Beyond the heat, customers have raved about the deliciousness and quality of specific dishes. The "lamb bites" were described as "delicious," indicating a flavorful and well-prepared appetizer. The "green beans" also received positive feedback for being "well prepared," suggesting attention to proper cooking techniques and seasoning. The "beef with ginger" was lauded as both "tender + delicious," highlighting the quality of the meat and the harmonious blend of flavors. Among the standout dishes mentioned, the "boiled fish in soup dish" was identified as a "standout winner," suggesting it is a particularly exceptional and highly recommended item on the menu. These specific positive comments provide valuable insights into the variety and quality of the offerings at Chengdu Taste.
While one reviewer noted that the prices were "a tad high," they also qualified this by stating that they were "commensurate with the value and portion given." This suggests that while the cost might be slightly above average, the quality of the ingredients and the generous size of the servings justify the price point. This perception of value for money is an important consideration for diners, indicating that the overall experience at Chengdu Taste is worth the investment.
The enthusiastic recommendation from multiple reviewers further solidifies the positive reputation of Chengdu Taste. One reviewer explicitly stated, "Would definitely recommend!" while another described the restaurant as "such a treasure - very appropriate for Bib Gourmand!" This reference to the Bib Gourmand, an award given by the Michelin Guide for exceptional food at moderate prices, speaks volumes about the quality and value offered by Chengdu Taste. It suggests that the restaurant not only delivers on flavor but also provides a high-quality dining experience that is recognized by culinary experts.
One particularly detailed review highlighted several dishes that evoked a strong sense of authenticity. The "pickled peppers with chicken gizzards" were praised for being "very very tender and fresh, as how it should be in chengdu." This direct comparison to the standards in Chengdu itself underscores the restaurant's commitment to genuine preparation and ingredient quality. Similarly, the "green peppers with fresh fish" was favorably compared to a signature dish at another well-regarded establishment ("Mountain House") but noted as being available at "half of the price," again emphasizing both quality and value. The reviewer's sentiment that "All the dishes reminded us of home" further reinforces the authenticity and emotional connection to the cuisine of Chengdu.
To conclude the meal, the "ice jelly" was mentioned as "a great closure of a feast for the taste buds," suggesting a refreshing and palate-cleansing dessert option. The reviewer also highlighted the "quantity" of the food, noting that it was "so large that we had enough left over for another meal." This reinforces the earlier point about generous portions, providing diners with excellent value and the potential for enjoying the flavors of Chengdu Taste beyond their initial dining experience.
Finally, the reviewer also commended the "Great services," indicating that the overall dining experience at Chengdu Taste is enhanced by attentive and efficient service. This holistic approach, combining authentic and delicious food with positive service, contributes to the restaurant's strong reputation and positive customer feedback.
In summary, Chengdu Taste in Alhambra, CA, offers a truly authentic and flavorful journey into Sichuan cuisine. Known for its bold and spicy dishes, prepared with traditional techniques and high-quality ingredients, the restaurant has garnered praise for its authenticity, generous portions, and value. The positive reviews, including a mention of being "appropriate for Bib Gourmand," highlight the exceptional quality of the food and the overall dining experience. For local users seeking a genuine taste of Chengdu, complete with fiery flavors and satisfying portions, Chengdu Taste is a highly recommended culinary destination.

Wanted an authentic Sichuan experience, and definitely got it here. I would NOT recommend ordering things extra spicy, because they are already sufficiently spicy thanks to the plethora of red chilis served with pretty much any dish. The lamb bites were delicious, the green beans were well prepared, and the beef with ginger was tender + delicious. The boiled fish in soup dish was a standout winner. Prices were a tad high but commensurate with the value and portion given. Would definitely recommend!
Such a treasure - very appropriate for Bib Gourmand! Pickled peppers with chicken gizzards were very very tender and fresh, as how it should be in chengdu. green peppers with fresh fish was as good as the signature dish at Mountain House but at half of the price. All the dishes reminded us of home. The ice jelly was a great closure of a feast for the taste buds. The quantity was so large that we had enough left over for another meal. Great services too!
Came here on a weeknight and there was no wait. There is street parking so can be difficult if it’s busy. You order from a QR code and the food gets delivered after sending it in. There are pictures so it helps with deciding what you want. Most of the food has that Szechuan spice so you will get that numbing goodness that is pretty additive. The inside has a couple of tables good for groups between 4 to 6. I highly recommend the Toothpick Lamb and Cold Noodles as they complement each other very nicely. The Kung Pao Chicken was pretty spicy but was delicious with white rice. Overall, enjoyed the food and how quickly everything came out!
this is a must try. it is one of my favorite places in the SGV and is easily the best sichuan restaurant i have ever been to. i strongly recommend the zajiangmian, and all of the cold dishes. the sliced pork with garlic sauce is standout. i have not tried much else from their menu yet, but i would feel confident ordering any dish. the portions are generous and the pricing is fair. if you like sichuan food, get in your car right now and get over here. it’s worth it.
I got the cumin lamb and tan tan noodles. Both were spicy and yummy. Service was fast and respectful. Recommend.
