About Chengdu Gourmet(Squirrel Hill)

Chengdu Gourmet (Squirrel Hill), located at 5840 Forward Ave in Pittsburgh, PA, is a Chinese restaurant that offers a variety of dishes, with some customers highlighting the spiciness and savory flavors of their Sichuan cuisine. One enthusiastic reviewer described their experience as "Spicy, Savory, and So Worth It!" They particularly praised the dumplings as "perfection" and the spicy beef noodle soup as intensely flavorful ("pure fire"), expressing a willingness to endure the spice again. This suggests that the restaurant is a go-to for those who enjoy bold and spicy dishes.

However, another customer had a more mixed experience, noting that their palate might not be suited for authentic Chinese food. They tried several items, including steamed dumplings, pumpkin pancakes, a chicken egg roll, and mango milk tea. The steamed dumplings were considered decent with a thin dough and acceptable meat, though the sauce was more acidic than preferred. The chicken egg roll was described as having a noticeable peanut butter-like taste and was served with mustard and duck sauce, but surprisingly no soy sauce. The pumpkin pancakes came in a small portion (three pieces) and were described as solid but not particularly flavorful, with a crispy exterior and chewy interior. Lastly, the mango milk tea was deemed decent, with tasty tea but boba that was slimy and hard.

This reviewer concluded that they likely would not return, citing small portions and higher-than-average prices, while acknowledging that the restaurant does serve some unique dishes. Therefore, Chengdu Gourmet (Squirrel Hill) offers a range of Sichuan specialties, with some dishes like the spicy beef noodle soup receiving high praise for their authentic and bold flavors. However, experiences with other dishes and the overall value might vary, and some customers have noted smaller portion sizes and higher prices. It may be a place to explore for those specifically seeking spicy and perhaps unique Sichuan flavors.

Spicy, Savory, and So Worth It! Chengdu Gourmet delivers! The dumplings were perfection, but the spicy beef noodle soup? Pure fire—literally! My taste buds are still recovering, and I’d do it all over again.

This place was unfortunately quite disappointing to me. It’s possible that I just don’t really have the palate for authentic Chinese food, but something about this spot just didn’t click with me. I got to try out their steamed dumplings, pumpkin pancakes, chicken egg roll, and mango milk tea. The steamed dumplings were decent. Not great, not bad. Okay portion for price. The dough was pretty thin, meat was fine, but the sauce was more acidic than I’d usually like. The egg roll was a bit strange. It had a pretty strong peanut butter-like taste to it. Seemed decently fresh and they did provide some sauces on the side for it. They had mustard and duck sauce, but strangely, no soy sauce for some reason. The pumpkin pancakes came in a pretty small portion (3 little ones). They were pretty solid but not the most flavorful. A little crispy on the outside and a nice chewiness to them. I liked them but didn’t love them. Finally, the milk tea was decent. The tea itself was quite tasty, milky, well made. But the boba they included on the bottom was definitely some of the worst pearls I’ve encountered in Pittsburgh. No chewiness left, just slimy and hard. All in all, I probably won’t come back. I tried both this location and the one in the North Hills, and neither really hit the spot for me. Small portions and higher than average prices, but they do serve some unique dishes.

Supposedly a Squirrel Hill institution. Egg rolls were still cold in the center. The General Tso's chicken did NOT hit the spot. Way too saucy. Eggplant dish was decent. The scallop and beef dish was ok.

The food here is fantastic. They have a traditional American Chinese menu then more of an actual Chinese menu and that's where you find the special items. I've been here four times now and haven't been able to not order the Chengdu Pork Belly yet because I love it so much. But everyone I've brought here, has enjoyed their choices as well. Little bit of a diamond in the rough.

Generous portions and so delicious! Prompt, courteous, and kind service. A wide variety of American and Chinese cuisine options. We got kung pao chicken, pork soup dumplings, and spicy beef stew. Bubble teas too! I can't wait to come back and try something new.
