About Chen's Garden

Welcome to Chen's Garden, a Chinese restaurant with a notable history serving the Berkeley community. As a long-standing establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, Chen's Garden offers a familiar and comforting taste of classic Chinese-American cuisine to local users. Located at 1818 Alcatraz Ave, Berkeley, CA 94703, USA, Chen's Garden has built a reputation over the years as a reliable spot for those seeking traditional dishes. You can reach them at (510) 601-7992 or their mobile number, +1 510-601-7992, for inquiries or to place an order. While specific details about recent promotions or extensive online information are limited, the customer reviews provide insights into their popular dishes and overall dining experience.

Chen's Garden appears to be a neighborhood Chinese restaurant that has been a part of the local culinary scene for a significant period. This longevity often suggests a consistent level of quality and service that has allowed them to maintain a loyal customer base over the years. For local users in Berkeley seeking a familiar and unpretentious Chinese dining experience, Chen's Garden offers a sense of tradition and reliability.

The environment at Chen's Garden is described by one reviewer as a "nice, small Chinese restaurant," suggesting a cozy and intimate setting. It's likely the kind of establishment where the focus is on the food and providing a comfortable space for diners to enjoy their meals. While detailed descriptions of the decor are not available, the overall impression is that of a traditional neighborhood eatery rather than a modern or trendy spot. The atmosphere is likely relaxed and conducive to enjoying classic Chinese-American dishes.

In terms of service, the reviews do not offer extensive details, but the fact that customers have returned after several years indicates a generally positive experience. The availability of condiments like Sambal Oelek and soy sauce on the tables suggests a thoughtful approach to allowing diners to customize their meals to their preferences. This attention to detail can contribute to a more satisfying dining experience overall.

One of the standout features of Chen's Garden, according to customer feedback, is their Tso's Chicken. This popular dish is described as "great," indicating a well-prepared version that is likely a favorite among their patrons. Tso's Chicken is a staple of American Chinese cuisine, known for its flavorful, slightly sweet and spicy sauce coating tender pieces of chicken. If you're a fan of this classic dish, Chen's Garden might be a place to try.

Another dish that has garnered attention is their Pork Fried Rice. One reviewer mentioned that it was the "best pork fried rice a year ago," although a more recent visit noted a slight lack of flavor. However, the reviewer also pointed out the "good character" of the seed oil used for frying, suggesting a commitment to quality ingredients and preparation methods. This slight inconsistency could be attributed to various factors, and the reviewer's intention to return indicates that the overall quality is still commendable.

A particularly noteworthy dish mentioned in the reviews is the BBQ Pork with Egg Over Rice. This "old favorite" was a winning combination for one customer, especially appreciated due to the availability of Sambal Oelek as a condiment. This dish, while common, is enhanced by the presence of chili oil or Sambal Oelek, which many establishments do not offer. The fact that Chen's Garden provides this option allows diners to add a spicy kick to their meal, catering to those who enjoy a bit of heat.

The availability of condiments like Sambal Oelek and soy sauce is a subtle but significant feature of Chen's Garden. These additions allow diners to adjust the flavor profile of their dishes according to their taste, enhancing the overall dining experience. Sambal Oelek, a chili paste, can add a significant amount of heat and flavor to any dish, and its presence suggests that Chen's Garden caters to a variety of palates.

In conclusion, Chen's Garden offers a traditional and reliable Chinese dining experience in Berkeley. As a long-established restaurant, they provide familiar and comforting dishes, with their Tso's Chicken being a noted favorite. While there might be slight variations in dishes like the Pork Fried Rice over time, the overall quality and the availability of appreciated condiments like Sambal Oelek contribute to a positive dining experience. For local users seeking a neighborhood Chinese restaurant with a history and a menu of classic dishes, Chen's Garden is a solid option to consider. Their commitment to serving good food in a comfortable setting has likely been key to their longevity in the Berkeley community.

They have great Tso's and had the best pork fried rice a year ago, this visit it had less flavor but whatever seed oil they use to fry has good character. I'll be back, maybe it was just a bad batch. And it wasn't bad, just lacking.

It appears to be one of those Chinese restaurants that have been around for a long while, and it has. I ate here previously a few years ago, and it was because of that experience that I decided to have another go. This experience turned out differently because I ordered something other than what I had intended. Because they had Sambal Oelek and soy sauce as condiments, I noticed they had an old favorite on the menu - BBQ Pork with egg over rice. Let's just say that for me, this is a winning combination, and it worked well in this case. Although this dish is common, many places usually don't have sambal oelek, or chili oil, which can liven up any plain dish. Otherwise, this place is a nice, small Chinese restaurant that serves good food.

Been coming here for years and the prices have definitely gone up too high for the portions and quality of the food you receive. Chicken fried rice used to be one of my favorites but it’s skimpy on the egg and veggies and chicken is in huge chunks that needs to be smaller and the same thing for the chow mein. I ordered fried prawns and OMG they were twice fried and was dry and horrible. Basically they didn’t sell them earlier and when I ordered them they fried them again EWWW!! I didn’t notice it till I got home. I’m gonna be looking for me a new Chinese food spot.

Not the fanciest. Not the showiest. Only doing take-out since the pandemic. But an extensive menu selection. A friendly, family-owned operation. Delicious food and ample servings. Especially convenient for me, as I reside only a few blocks away. I can either call in an order, or enter it online, and by the time I stroll up there, it's just about ready for me!
