About Chen's Chinese Restaurant

Welcome to the local guide for Chen's Chinese Restaurant, located at 530 E Hunt Hwy in San Tan Valley, Arizona. As a Chinese restaurant serving the local community, Chen's aims to provide a variety of Chinese dishes to its patrons. This introduction will offer an overview of what you might anticipate from this establishment, based on the information available online from customer reviews spanning from January 2024 to November 2024.

Situated on East Hunt Highway in San Tan Valley, Chen's Chinese Restaurant is located within a plaza. The restaurant can be contacted at (480) 882-9133 or via their mobile number, +1 480-882-9133, for inquiries regarding orders, menu items, and services.

Details regarding the specific environment and ambiance of Chen's Chinese Restaurant are not extensively covered in the provided reviews. One reviewer from January 2024 described the food as having a "California-fresh Chinese -vibe kinda thing going on," which might suggest a lighter and fresher approach to their cuisine. However, this does not directly describe the restaurant's physical setting. Typically, Chinese restaurants offer a casual and functional space for dining or waiting for takeout orders. Local residents interested in dining at the location may consider contacting the restaurant directly for information about their current facilities.

In terms of services, the reviews indicate that Chen's Chinese Restaurant offers both takeout and delivery. One customer in the initial review (likely from before January 2024, though undated) mentioned placing an online order for Door Dash delivery, indicating their participation with third-party delivery services. This customer experienced an issue with an incomplete order. Several other reviews mention ordering takeout, suggesting this is a popular service. The positive review from January 2024 also implies efficient service, describing it as "fast but nutritious." However, the incident with the incomplete delivery order highlights potential inconsistencies in order accuracy for delivery customers. The update from November 2024, while focused on food quality changes, does not explicitly comment on the service speed or accuracy.

The features of Chen's Chinese Restaurant appear to have evolved over the period covered by the reviews. In January 2024, a reviewer described their food as "elevated Chinese food" with a "California-fresh Chinese -vibe," characterized by "low sodium, light broth, crunchy veggies," suggesting a focus on fresh ingredients and a healthier preparation style. Dishes ordered at that time included pepper steak, cashew shrimp, wonton soup (described as a "meal" with fresh crunchy vegetables), beef skewers, and an egg roll. The reviewer was impressed with the quality, taste, texture, and price, noting that each entree could feed two to three people. Another positive review from an unspecified date also praised the "quality, taste, texture and price" of the Hunan Beef with white rice, spring roll, and wonton soup (noting fresh crunchy cabbage). However, the update from November 2024 paints a different picture. A customer who ordered a family dinner (Sesame Chicken and Mongolian Beef) reported a decline in quality. The wonton soup was described as having a smaller portion and being prepared with a cabbage or lettuce leaf instead of the previously abundant "crunchy veggie add ins." The fried shrimp in the family meal was disappointing, with "thick flavorless gummy breading." The Mongolian Beef was "overly sweet" with an "overpowering sauce," and the Sesame Chicken lacked flavor. While the vegetable rice was described as a "nice version of fried rice" with plenty of vegetables, the overall impression of the family meal was negative. This suggests a significant shift in the restaurant's food quality and potentially its ingredients and preparation methods between early 2024 and late 2024.

Regarding promotional information, the reviews do not explicitly mention any ongoing specials or discounts. The family dinner option itself could be considered a bundled offering, but no specific promotional pricing is detailed. The initial review about the missing beef in the Chow Fun mentions "premium prices," but this is in the context of a complaint about an incomplete order rather than a discussion of promotions. Therefore, no specific promotional details can be confirmed based on the available information.

The customer reviews for Chen's Chinese Restaurant present a somewhat contradictory picture over time. Early 2024 reviews highlight fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned food with a "California-fresh" style. The wonton soup was particularly praised for its abundance of fresh vegetables. However, the November 2024 update indicates a significant decline in quality, with complaints about oily and overly sweet sauces, flavorless dishes, and a reduction in the quality and quantity of ingredients in previously well-regarded items like the wonton soup and fried shrimp. This suggests a potential change in management, chefs, or ingredient sourcing that has negatively impacted the food quality.

The initial review about the missing beef in the Chow Fun points to issues with order accuracy, particularly for delivery orders, and a potentially inflexible customer service approach when addressing mistakes. The customer's frustration at being asked to return to the restaurant despite ordering delivery due to an inability to travel highlights a disconnect between the restaurant's solution and the customer's needs. This incident, combined with the later reports of declining food quality, paints a concerning picture for potential customers.

For local residents in San Tan Valley considering Chen's Chinese Restaurant, it is crucial to be aware of the significant discrepancies in recent customer experiences. While earlier reviews suggest a positive dining experience with fresh and flavorful food, the more recent update indicates a substantial drop in quality across several dishes. Potential customers might want to consider the date of the reviews when forming their expectations. If the positive experiences from early 2024 are indicative of past standards, the current quality, as described in the November 2024 review, may be disappointing. It might be prudent to read more recent reviews if available or perhaps try a small order to assess the current food quality and service for themselves before placing a larger order.

In conclusion, Chen's Chinese Restaurant in San Tan Valley has received varied feedback. While past customers praised its fresh and flavorful "California-fresh" style Chinese cuisine, a more recent review indicates a significant decline in food quality, with issues reported in the Sesame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, wonton soup, and fried shrimp. Additionally, there has been a report of an incomplete delivery order and a customer service approach that was not well-received. Potential customers should be aware of these recent negative trends when considering Chen's and might want to seek more up-to-date reviews or try a small order to gauge the current quality and service standards.

Placed an online order for Door Dash delivery. The Beef Chow Fun had NO BEEF, lots of egg, NO BEEF. Called restaurant and was told the manager said to bring it back in and they will remake it. There are reasons customers order online for delivery one being they cannot get to the restaurant and that is exactly why I ordered online. Asked for another option and was told that is it. Bad business, especially for a regular customer. Get your business in order, how dare you send incomplete orders at premium prices and just expect to inconvenience the paying customer even more than you have already done by leaving out the beef in Beef Chow Fun. Funny because you don't have Chow Fun on your menu only Beef Chow Fun as a Chefs Special, so really how hard is it to get it right???? You need to implement quality control at your restaurant and make sure orders are complete and correct.

Update Nov 2024. Something’s changed. And not in a good way. My wife and I had the family dinner - Sesame Chicken and Mongolian Beef. Family meals come with two fried shrimp, two egg roll, choice of several rice options, and a choice of soup. You cannot order two types of soup or two types of rice, so even though our tastes are different, we agreed on the vegetable rice and wonton soup. The wonton soup portions were served in individual containers and so I do not understand why we could not order different types. Also, the soup is NOTHING like it was just a year ago. The portion was small but more importantly, it was prepared with what was either a cabbage leaf or a lettuce leaf. All of the crunchy veggie add ins from the last time we ordered are now gone. The fried shrimp was disappointing - thick flavorless gummy breading over a small shrimp with no flavor. My Mongolian Beef was served in an overly sweet, thick, overpowering sauce. My wife’s Sesame Chicken lacked flavor. The vegetable rice lacked flavor but was a nice version of fried rice. Loaded with veggies. When you order a family dinner there’s no option without an upcharge for any seafood. The standard choices include pork, chicken or beef. Portions are smaller and prices are up, but that’s par for the course these days. We will have to decide whether or not to continue to support Chen’s. New photos are attached. Update Jan 2024. Ordered pepper steak, cashew shrimp, a large won ton ($8.95 and feeds four), beef skewers, an egg roll. This is elevated Chinese food. The soup alone is a meal with so many fresh crunchy veggies added. Light broth, low sodium. Same with each entre - low sodium, light broth, crunchy veggies - which means fresh. I call it contemporary Chinese. Fast but nutritious healthy satisfying and affordable. Each entre will feed two-three. I'm still impressed. Chen's has a California-fresh Chinese -vibe kinda thing going on. More pics attached. Ordered take out. First time here. Completely delighted with the quality, taste, texture and price. Had the Hunan Beef with white rice and a spring roll and a cup of wonton soup. The soup was served with fresh crunchy cabbage. The beef had a great smoky flavor, good heat, fresh crunchy veggies, and the beef itself was thinly sliced and very tender. Will be back. I recommend. Pic attached.

I've eaten here several times, every single time we come food takes anywhere between 30-45 mins even for just fried rice. The prices are pretty outrageous for portion size. The attached photo is a 13 dollar meal of vegetable fried rice, the container pretty much fits in palm of my hand. The people at the counter are never very friendly, and overall their food is a very solid 3/10, always disappointing

LOVE the new server girl! This place definitely needed some new life and she brought it. I don't know how long she's been there but she needs a raise or promotion for sure. Her name escapes me because I'm terrible with names but I remember that her hair was sort of green and she wore glasses 😅. Also the food portions here for the price? Unbeatable. Authentic and delicious!!

The service at Chens has unfortunately declined significantly recently, I have never had an issue with them before but tonight I ordered pot stickers and they were cold and soggy. I had waited 20 minutes without complaint and then when I opened the potstickers I called and asked for them to remake it they agreed but then a few minutes later they called me back and said they would not remake my food because they were too busy when I asked for a refund they refused. I was already on my way back to pick up the new potstickers so I returned to the restaurant to talk to whom they referred to as the boss but he refused to speak to me because they were too busy. I told them that he needed to speak with me or I would dispute the charges. The young man in the glassed started to yell at me. I had not raised my voice or been disrespectful at any point towards the staff because I also work in customer service and I understand that the job can be stressful. There is absolutely no reason for that kind of behavior especially since I was just asking for them to correct their mistake. I then told them that I would wait until they were not busy to speak with their manager because I had also witnessed the employee being rude to another customer who just asked them when her order would be ready after she had already waited 20 minutes after her order was supposed to be ready. I waited another 30 minutes before speaking with their manager who eventually agreed to refund me but this whole experience ruined my night I will not be returning in the future and would not suggest this restaurant to anyone else especially since Bobo China is across the street and the food as I have learned tonight is much better and cheaper.
