About Chen's Chinese Restaurant

Welcome to Chen's Chinese Restaurant, a local establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, located at 2131 E Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803, USA. Chen's Chinese Restaurant offers a menu of familiar Chinese dishes, catering to the local community. For inquiries or to place an order, you can contact them at (562) 317-7554 or +1 562-317-7554.

Based on customer reviews, the environment at Chen's Chinese Restaurant is described as clean and quiet, with a large dining area and ample seating. This suggests that the restaurant offers a spacious and potentially comfortable setting for dine-in customers. The cleanliness of the establishment is a positive aspect highlighted by a reviewer, contributing to a pleasant dining atmosphere. While the ambiance is not extensively detailed, the description implies a functional and well-maintained space for enjoying a meal.

The services at Chen's Chinese Restaurant include both dine-in and takeout options. One reviewer mentioned dining in and praised the waiting staff as "very sweet," indicating friendly and attentive service for in-house customers. However, another reviewer who frequently ordered pickup reported a less pleasant experience when calling in orders, alleging that someone assumed to be the owner often yelled due to background noise on their end, even when the customer was speaking from a quiet environment. This discrepancy in service quality between dine-in and takeout experiences is a point to consider.

The food quality at Chen's Chinese Restaurant has received mixed feedback from the available reviews. One customer found the General Tso and dumplings to be "good, average at worst," and particularly praised the orange chicken and rice as "fantastic." They also noted that the honey walnut shrimp is fried and considered it "pretty good" if fried shrimp is preferred. This positive feedback suggests that some dishes at Chen's are well-received. However, another reviewer who had visited multiple times found the food to "fall short, even for Chinese fast food." They reported issues with incorrect orders, such as receiving pork lo-mein and iced tea when chicken lo-mein and Diet Coke were ordered. This customer also found the food to be often underseasoned and lacking in flavor. The specific preparation of some dishes was also criticized, with "fried rice" described as more like steamed and orange chicken having more batter than chicken. An egg roll was described as having "nothing in it" and being inferior to frozen alternatives. These contrasting opinions indicate a potential inconsistency in food quality and preparation.

One feature of Chen's Chinese Restaurant, based on a positive review, is the quality of certain dishes like the orange chicken and rice, General Tso, and dumplings. The large seating capacity and quiet atmosphere might also be considered features for those who prefer a more spacious and less noisy dining environment. However, the negative feedback regarding incorrect orders and the lack of flavor in some dishes, as well as the preparation style not meeting expectations (e.g., "fried" rice being steamed), are also important aspects to note. The friendly demeanor of the dine-in waiting staff is a positive feature mentioned by one reviewer.

However, there are contrasting opinions regarding the food quality, with some dishes like the orange chicken and rice receiving praise, while others have been described as underseasoned or not meeting expectations in terms of preparation and ingredients. General Tso and Dumplings are good, average at worst. The orange chicken and rice is fantastic and the honey walnut shrimp is fried. I definitely do not prefer it fried but if that’s your thing it’s pretty good. Staff is super friendly, restraint is clean and quiet, large with a lot of seating.

I’ve been here several times in the past year living in the area. Unfortunately, while I’ve given them multiple chances since they’re the closest Chinese restaurant, the food unfortunately falls short, even for Chinese fast food. Oftentimes we get the wrong orders (today I ordered chicken lo-mein and Diet Coke and got pork lo-mein with iced tea). The food itself can be underseasoned and barely has flavor. Service is decent at times I’ve dined in (the waiting staff are very sweet) but the call for pickup is usually unpleasant and often has who I assume to be the owner yelling at me because of the noise on their side when I’m usually speaking from a quiet room. As I’m leaving the area soon, overall I have to say I would not recommend this place to anyone and would refer them to try out the other Chinese fast food spots in downtown instead.

This place used to be really amazing and have really good quality food an amazing service but lately their food quality has gone to complete garbage I paid $25 for a smoke tea duck and 3/4 of the mill was nothing but bone completely inedible call the restaurant up the following morning since they were closed by the time I got my food and they told me the only way they're going to give me a refund is if I drive to their facility with the food to show them before they give a refund. This isn't the first time it's happened and has become a normal standard for them. Now they want me to drive all the way to their location with the food to show them how poor quality it is before they issue a refund it's sad but after 8 years of it being my favorite Chinese restraunt I won't be patronizing this location again.

Food was okay. The beef in the chow mein and the orange chicken is very chewy. The fried rice is pretty good and flavorful.

Good Chinese food. Parking on the road there is a dedicated lot nearby. Ambiance is good but there is typical musky smell not overpowering. Food portions are big so order carefully. BBQ steak was super, sesame chicken was too sweet and broccoli too big. Chicken fried rice, kungpoa shrimp were delicious. Steamed dumplings was very dry not great. Overall a good Chinese restaurant in downtown Long Beach
