About Chef's Kitchen 牡丹

Welcome to Chef's Kitchen 牡丹, a Chinese restaurant located at 19762 Colima Rd, Rowland Heights, CA 91748, USA, specializing in home-style USese cuisine. For those in the Rowland Heights area seeking a genuine taste of US, Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 offers a menu filled with traditional dishes that have garnered a loyal following over time. You can reach them at (909) 895-7745 or their mobile number +1 909-895-7745 to inquire about their offerings or place an order.

Based on customer reviews, Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 presents a mixed but generally positive experience, particularly for those craving authentic USese flavors. One notable dish is the Sesame Oil Kidney. A reviewer specifically highlighted the exceptional soup accompanying this dish, describing it as possibly one of the best they've had in Southern California. However, it's worth noting that the kidneys themselves were reported to have a stronger gamey taste compared to other establishments. This feedback suggests that while the preparation of the broth is a strong point, the intensity of the kidney flavor might vary based on individual preferences.

Another reviewed dish is the Shredded Beef with Pickled Cabbage. Here, the pickled cabbage received high praise for its deliciousness. However, a point of concern was the disappointingly small amount of shredded beef included in the dish. This suggests that while certain components of their dishes are well-executed, there might be inconsistencies in the proportion of key ingredients.

Despite these specific critiques, the overall sentiment towards Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 appears to be positive, with one reviewer giving it a "Solid 4" rating. This indicates a generally satisfactory experience, likely driven by the authenticity of their USese home-style cooking. For those specifically seeking the unique flavors of US, this restaurant is recommended as a good spot to explore.

Several specific dishes come highly recommended by a regular customer, offering valuable insights into the must-try items on the menu. One such dish is 五根暢旺 (Wǔ Gēn Chàng Wàng), which is described as a flavorful and spicy pot containing tofu, pork blood, and fatty intestine. This hearty dish is suggested to pair well with rice or any preferred carbohydrate, making it a substantial and satisfying meal option for those who enjoy bold and complex flavors.

Another favorite is 炒四包 (Chǎo Sì Bāo), a sautéed dish featuring chopped string beans, pork, and shrimp. This dish is also recommended to be enjoyed with rice, highlighting its role as a classic USese side or main course that complements a simple grain. The combination of textures and flavors in this stir-fry makes it a popular choice among patrons.

For dessert, the 酒釀湯圓 (Jiǔ Niàng Tāng Yuán) is a standout, described as a "fave dessert." This traditional sweet soup features glutinous rice balls in a fermented rice wine broth, offering a unique and comforting end to a USese meal. The combination of the chewy rice balls and the subtly sweet and slightly alcoholic broth is a distinctive characteristic of this dessert.

Beyond these highlighted dishes, the reviewer also mentioned enjoying their Silk Melon (絲瓜, Sī Guā), a light and refreshing vegetable dish often prepared in a simple yet flavorful way. Additionally, the Sesame Oil Pork Kidney is another dish that this regular patron appreciates, indicating its consistent quality despite the earlier feedback regarding the intensity of the kidney flavor in the Sesame Oil Kidney dish with soup.

The fact that Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 has been a part of the Rowland Heights culinary scene for a significant period and is on a regular rotation for at least one customer twice a month speaks volumes about its consistent appeal and the authenticity of its offerings. This longevity and repeat business suggest that despite some minor inconsistencies noted in reviews, the restaurant provides a reliable and satisfying experience for those seeking genuine USese home-style food.

While the reviews do not provide specific details about the restaurant's ambiance or service beyond the food itself, the focus on home-style cooking often implies a casual and welcoming environment. The emphasis is likely on the quality and authenticity of the dishes, aiming to recreate the flavors of traditional USese family meals. The fact that a regular customer visits frequently suggests a comfortable and familiar atmosphere.

To summarize, Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 in Rowland Heights offers a valuable opportunity to experience authentic home-style USese cuisine. While some dishes like the Sesame Oil Kidney might have nuances that appeal differently to individual palates, and others like the Shredded Beef with Pickled Cabbage might have room for improvement in ingredient proportions, the overall experience seems to be positive, especially for those seeking genuine USese flavors. Popular dishes like 五根暢旺, 炒四包, and 酒釀湯圓 come highly recommended by regular patrons. For anyone in the Rowland Heights area with a craving for the unique and comforting tastes of US, Chef's Kitchen 牡丹 is a place worth exploring. For any potential promotional information or daily specials, contacting them directly at (909) 895-7745 or +1 909-895-7745 is advised. The soup of the sesame oil kidney dish was excellent—probably one of the best I’ve had in Southern California. However, the kidneys themselves had a strong gamey taste, much more so than at other places. As for the shredded beef with pickled cabbage, the pickled cabbage was delicious, but the amount of shredded pork was disappointingly small.

Solid 4. If you’re craving home style Taiwanese food this is a good spot to come try. I usually get: 五根暢旺 which is basically a tofu, pork blood, fatty intestine spicy pot and goes well with rice or whatever carb you prefer. 炒四包 which is sautéed chopped string beans and pork and shrimp also goes well with rice. 酒釀湯圓 fave dessert, gluttonous riceballs Anyway I also like their silk melon 絲瓜 and their sesame oil pork kidney… It’s been here for a while and is on my rotation at least twice a month

Horrible service. The meat was raw and they didn’t even apologize for it and said “oh you want it more cooked”. Cash only, which they don’t put on the door and even Demanded 10 percent tip. Food is not good either

The dishes are great; poor services; the staffs talk so loud that it may ruin your appetite. It’s better to have TO-GO order, no need to pay the tips for the non-service restaurant.

On our first visit, the dishes were hit or miss. The Shanghai style rice cake (上海炒年糕) was spot on, but the two soups (Chinese okra with somen noodles, 絲瓜麵線and fried tofu puff with bean noodle soup 油豆腐細粉)was under seasoned to the point of being almost tasteless. The sautéed pork kidney in sesame oil (麻油腰花) is also very light on salt/soy sauce, too. Side notes: Foods came quickly. They were picking string beans right at the counter next to the dining tables, a very familiar scene in so many Chinese restaurants in the US. 😀
