About Chef's Express
Located at 3442 Village Dr in Castro Valley, CA, Chef's Express is a Chinese restaurant that has served the local community for a significant period. As a part of the Chinese Restaurant category, it traditionally offered a range of Chinese dishes with both dine-in and takeout services available. Initial impressions from one reviewer highlighted several positive aspects of the establishment, including a "Neat Clean serving and dining area" and the availability of "Indoor dining." The food was described as "Hot Fresh Food," and the staff was commended for being "Kind knowledgeable Helpful." The menu was noted for its "Many different selections" with "Easy to understand pricing and menu," and the overall customer service was characterized by a "Smile." Furthermore, the prices were considered "Very reasonable." This paints a picture of a well-regarded local eatery with a focus on cleanliness, fresh food, and customer satisfaction.
However, a more recent and detailed review presents a starkly different perspective, indicating a significant shift in the restaurant's quality and operation. This review comes from a long-term customer of ten years, who expressed their disappointment with the changes observed. According to this patron, there has been a noticeable decline in the food quality since a change in ownership that reportedly occurred "a couple months ago." This customer mentioned that upon entering the restaurant, they overheard others also questioning if the recipes had been altered, suggesting a widespread perception of change among the clientele.
The reviewer provided specific examples of the diminished food quality. They stated that the food had "completely changed" and likened its current standard to that of "the safeway Chinese bar," implying a significant drop in taste and quality. They also noted that despite the decline in food quality, the prices had increased, and the portion sizes had become smaller, further exacerbating their disappointment. The food itself was described as "bland and overcooked." Specific dishes mentioned were the potstickers, which were characterized as "gummy and thick," the chicken, which was "dry inside with barely a whisper of flavor," and the noodles, which were described as "blander than I thought possible."
The employee working at the time, who was described as "very nice," confirmed the change in ownership. The long-time customer expressed their sadness over the decline of a place they had frequented for many years and stated their intention not to return under the current circumstances. They suggested that others should "go somewhere else or save your money," indicating a strong negative sentiment towards the current state of Chef's Express. However, they did leave a possibility of returning in the future if the restaurant were to improve or revert to its old recipes.
Considering these two contrasting reviews, local users should be aware of the reported changes at Chef's Express. While the restaurant was once known for its clean environment, fresh food, friendly service, and reasonable prices, recent feedback suggests a significant downturn in food quality following a change in ownership. The specific issues highlighted include blandness, overcooking, and changes in the texture and flavor of previously enjoyed dishes like potstickers and chicken. The increase in price coupled with smaller portions further compounds the negative experience for at least one long-time customer.
At this time, there is no information available regarding any new features, services, or promotional offers under the new ownership. The focus of the recent review is solely on the perceived decline in food quality and value. Therefore, local users will need to weigh the historical positive reputation against the recent negative feedback when considering Chef's Express as a dining option.
For those who may have been patrons of Chef's Express in the past, the recent review serves as a cautionary note. If you are accustomed to a certain standard of food and service, it might be prudent to manage your expectations or perhaps try a small order initially to assess the current quality for yourself. The fact that even long-term customers have noticed a significant change suggests that the impact of the new ownership is substantial.
Local users who are new to the area or have never tried Chef's Express might find the recent negative review a significant deterrent. The detailed descriptions of the bland and poorly cooked food, along with the comparison to a supermarket deli, do not paint a favorable picture. While the employee encountered was described as nice, the core offering of a restaurant – the food – appears to be a major concern for at least one recent customer.
In conclusion, Chef's Express in Castro Valley is currently in a state of transition following a change in ownership. While it once enjoyed a reputation for cleanliness, fresh food, friendly service, and reasonable prices, recent feedback indicates a significant decline in food quality, characterized by blandness, overcooking, and smaller portions at higher prices. Local users should be aware of these reported changes and consider them when deciding whether to dine at or order from Chef's Express. It might be advisable to seek more recent reviews or perhaps try the food firsthand to form a personal opinion on its current state.

Customer Reviews
Neat Clean serving and dining area. Indoor dining available. Hot Fresh Food. Kind knowledgeable Helpful staff. Many different selections. Easy to understand pricing and menu. Customer Service with a Smile. Very reasonable prices.
This breaks my heart to write this since I've been going here for the last 10 years, through highschool, covid, all of it. I loved this place, but after today I dont think I'll ever come back. The food has completely changed, as well as the quality. I noticed the second i walked inside and was told many people have been asking if the recipes had been changed. This could've come from the safeway Chinese bar and I wouldn't have noticed, not to mention the price has gone up more, which if the food was good and they hadn't made the portion size smaller I wouldn't have minded. It's bland and overcooked. The potstickers are gummy and thick, the chicken dry inside with barely a whisper of flavor, and the noodles blander than I thought possible. The employee who was working there (very nice) said a couple months ago there was a change in ownership. It's ashame that this what they chose to do with the restaurant. If it ever gets better or goes back to the old recipes I'll maybe go back but for now, just go somewhere else or save your money.
Today is the first time I ordered from here and most likely this will be the last. I ordered Szechuan Fried Shrimp without rice. They charge extra for not adding rice. Explanation was the whole order would be shrimp but when I opened the box it was not my order instead it has Shrimp Kung Pao. The box is full with vegetables and a few shrimp, not fried just watery sauce. Also I ordered Salty Fish, Eggplant & Chicken. They charge extra for sea food that's okay but when I opened the box that has only few pieces of fish, no chicken and extremely extremely oily. I called to check with them if they can change it but no one pick up the phone. I am very disappointed. I wasted $63.42.
This place used to be okay but under the new management, the food is gross and not worth a penny. There is a new woman who works there. She is extremely rude and yells at every customer.
Big portions for good prices. I got the #2 entree special with thin chow mein/honey sesame chicken/sweet and sour pork and an egg roll on the side. It's not going to blow your mind but it's tasty and filling. Fast service.
