About Chef King
Chef King, situated at 100 Vaden Dr in Gretna, Virginia, serves as a local establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, offering a taste of Chinese cuisine to the residents of Gretna and surrounding areas. Based on the limited but insightful customer reviews available, Chef King presents a unique culinary experience that resonates with those familiar with the Chinese food found in the New York and New Jersey regions.
One reviewer, originally from the NY/NJ area, expressed that finding Chef King was a "gem" due to its similarity to the Chinese food they were accustomed to back home. This suggests that Chef King offers a style of Chinese cooking that might be considered more authentic or traditional compared to other Chinese restaurants in the local part of Virginia. The reviewer noted that Chinese food in this particular area of Virginia is generally not as impressive, making Chef King a standout option for those seeking a more familiar taste.
This positive review also highlighted a specific dish, the boneless spare ribs, which the customer enjoyed, although they found it to be a "little on the saltier side" for their personal preference. Despite this minor critique, the reviewer expressed their intention to return, indicating an overall satisfaction with the food quality and taste. This suggests that Chef King's menu features dishes that are flavorful and appealing to those with certain regional preferences for Chinese cuisine.
The same reviewer also touched upon the service and atmosphere of Chef King. They described the staff as "very quiet and soft spoken" and offered a perspective on potential communication nuances, mentioning the possibility of a language barrier and cultural differences. The reviewer suggested that what might be perceived as rudeness by some could be attributed to cultural norms often seen in non-Americanized Chinese restaurants. This is an important point to consider for local customers who might have different expectations based on more Westernized service styles.
However, not all feedback regarding the service at Chef King has been positive. Another review presents a starkly contrasting experience, describing a female staff member as "incredibly rude." This reviewer recounted an incident where the staff member allegedly refused to take an order after being asked a straightforward question about the use of MSG in their food, citing food sensitivity concerns. This interaction suggests that customer service at Chef King might be inconsistent or that certain inquiries are not well-received. This negative feedback is a crucial point for potential customers who prioritize courteous and accommodating service.
A significant practical consideration mentioned in one of the reviews is that Chef King operates as a cash-only business. This is stated as the reviewer's "only problem" with the restaurant, as they do not always carry cash. This policy is an important piece of information for potential customers, as it necessitates planning ahead to ensure they have the appropriate form of payment. The lack of card payment options might be inconvenient for some diners and could be a deciding factor for those who rarely carry cash.
Considering the limited information available, it is challenging to provide a comprehensive overview of the environment and other services at Chef King. The positive reviewer mentioned a similarity to the Chinese food from their home region and commented on the quiet demeanor of the staff, but no specific details were provided about the restaurant's decor, ambiance, or other potential services such as takeout or delivery. The negative review focused solely on the unpleasant interaction with a staff member.
Given the contrasting reviews, local users considering Chef King should be aware of a few key aspects. Firstly, the food seems to be well-regarded by those familiar with a more traditional NY/NJ style of Chinese cuisine, suggesting a potential for authentic flavors. Secondly, the restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, which requires customers to come prepared. Lastly, the service experience appears to be variable, with one reviewer noting quiet and perhaps culturally different interactions, while another reported outright rudeness in response to a dietary inquiry.
Without further information regarding promotional offers or a broader range of customer experiences, it is difficult to assess additional features of Chef King. The available reviews primarily focus on the food quality in relation to a specific regional style and highlight a notable cash-only policy, along with mixed feedback on customer service.
In conclusion, Chef King in Gretna, VA, offers a taste of Chinese cuisine that may be particularly appealing to those who appreciate the flavors common in the New York and New Jersey areas. The food quality seems to be generally positive, although individual preferences for saltiness may vary. Potential customers should be prepared for a cash-only payment policy and be aware that service experiences might differ. While one reviewer found the staff quiet and perhaps facing a language barrier, another reported a negative and rude interaction. Local users seeking a specific style of Chinese food in Gretna may find Chef King worth a visit, keeping these points in mind.

Customer Reviews
My only problem is that they don’t take cards, and I don’t always carry cash. I like the food because I’m from NY/NJ area and finding this place is a gem since it is very similar to home. Chinese food in this part of Virginia is not so great, but these people in Gretna have come the closest. I loved it. A little on the saltier side for my preference for my bonesless spare ribs, other than that I intend to go back. I see some negative comments, from years ago, I’m not sure if they have changed management, but they are very quiet and soft spoken. Remember there is a language barrier and also a different culture. Most non americanized chinese people in restaurants come off as rude, but I think it’s just a culture thing.
The woman is incredibly rude. She refused to take an order after being asked if they use MSG in their food. It’s a simple question asked because of food sensitivity concerns.
NEVER AGAIN. They don’t accept cards only cash. Then my orange chicken was SUPER DRY like it had been re cooked and left out. Never again smh
Been going here for 20 years just to get their Crabmeat Ragoons. I've tried Ragoons at 30 different Chinese restaurants and nobody can compare to Chef Kings Ragoons💯
Good food, no help so expect to wait when busy. Just man and woman, working hard but get overwhelmed. Ordering ahead does not help. Speak very little English.
