About Chef China

Chef China, situated at 9726 Campo Rd in Spring Valley, California, serves the local community as a Chinese restaurant specializing in takeout services. Reachable by phone at (619) 460-7286 or +1 619-460-7286, Chef China operates within the platform category of "Chinese Restaurant," focusing on providing a variety of Chinese dishes for customers to enjoy off-site in Spring Valley and the surrounding areas. It is important to note that, based on recent customer feedback, Chef China currently operates as a cash-only establishment with no indoor seating, a change that appears to have occurred possibly due to COVID-19 related restrictions.

Regarding the environment, customer reviews indicate that Chef China is not designed for an ambient dine-in experience. While there might have been indoor seating in the past, the current operational model is strictly takeout. This suggests that the physical space is primarily focused on kitchen operations and a counter area for order placement and pickup. Customers visiting the premises should expect a functional environment catering to quick service rather than a comfortable dining atmosphere. The focus is on the preparation and efficient handling of takeout orders.

The primary service offered by Chef China is takeout. This allows customers in the Spring Valley area to conveniently order and collect Chinese food to enjoy at their homes or other locations. While delivery service is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, it is not uncommon for takeout-focused restaurants to offer this option, potentially through their own staff or third-party delivery platforms. Customers interested in delivery should inquire directly with Chef China about its availability, service area, and any associated fees. The takeout service caters to individuals and families looking for Chinese cuisine without the option of dining in at the restaurant itself.

Customer reviews present a somewhat mixed picture of the food quality and overall experience at Chef China. One long-term customer of four years, who had visited approximately seven times, consistently praised the food as "always excellent" and the staff as "nice," also highlighting the generous portion sizes that often provided leftovers for several days. This positive feedback suggests that, at least in the past, Chef China was capable of delivering high-quality food and good value.

However, more recent reviews indicate a potential decline in consistency. One customer expressed disappointment with a recent order of vegetable lo mein and egg rolls. While they had previously enjoyed the egg rolls for being fresh and large, this time they were described as "soaked in grease" and "pure mush" inside. The lo mein was also described as "slimy," leading the reviewer to comment on a perceived trend of inconsistency in restaurant quality. This suggests that the standards at Chef China may have fluctuated, leading to a less satisfactory experience for some customers.

Another concerning review detailed a particularly unpleasant experience involving a finding of a long strand of black hair in a dish of chicken chop suey. This incident, which occurred on February 12, 2025, led the customer to express extreme disgust and vow never to eat at Chef China again. The reviewer also mentioned having bragged about the restaurant's generous portions to colleagues prior to this incident, based on past positive experiences. They noted that a similar complaint about finding hair had appeared in other reviews, raising questions about hygiene practices, particularly regarding the wearing of hairnets in the kitchen. The customer who found the hair also expressed dissatisfaction with the restaurant's response to the complaint, as only an offer to inform the kitchen staff was made, without any offer of a refund.

Given these contrasting reviews, it is difficult to definitively state the current quality and consistency of Chef China's food. While some long-term patrons have had positive experiences, more recent feedback raises concerns about both food preparation and hygiene. The generous portion sizes mentioned in one positive review could be considered a feature, but this benefit is undermined if the quality is inconsistent or if hygiene standards are not met. The fact that Chef China is cash-only and lacks indoor seating are also key characteristics that potential customers should be aware of.

No specific promotional information is available for Chef China based on the provided reviews. Restaurants often use promotions to attract customers, especially for takeout services. These could include discounts on specific dishes, combination meals, or special offers for first-time orders. To learn about any current promotions or deals at Chef China, customers would need to contact the restaurant directly via phone. Inquiring about any specials when placing an order is always a good practice to potentially save money or try new items at a discounted price.

In conclusion, Chef China in Spring Valley, CA, is a Chinese restaurant currently operating as a cash-only takeout establishment. While some past customers have praised the food quality and generous portions, more recent reviews indicate significant concerns regarding consistency in food preparation and hygiene. The finding of hair in a dish is a serious issue that potential customers should consider. While one reviewer found the food excellent over multiple visits, another experienced a notable decline in quality, and a third had a very negative experience due to a hygiene issue and perceived poor customer service response. For those in the Spring Valley area looking for Chinese takeout, Chef China is an option, but it would be prudent to weigh the positive and negative feedback and perhaps consider trying a small order first to assess the current quality and standards based on personal experience. Contacting the restaurant directly for menu information, delivery options (if available), and any current promotions is recommended.

Another disappointment. First open it was delicous, very reasonable pricing. Ordered last night, veg lo mein and eggrolls. The egg rolls have always been so good, fresh not frozen, large and fresh. Last night they were soaked in grease and pure mush on the inside. The lo mein was slimy. I don't know what is happening with restaurant quality in this day and age because this seems to be a trend.... inconsistency and on a downward spiral. Not sure if this is a labor problem or people's standards have gotten so low that restaurants/biz don't have to put out a good product. I was hopeful about this place.

I have gone to Chef China for about 7 times in the past 4 years. The food is always excellent, and the staff are nice. I can’t believe the portions…I have eaten the leftovers over a period of 3-4 days. It’s not exactly ambient, but it’s cash only with no indoor seating; it appears there used to be in-house dining, but likely because of COVID, that changed everything. My opinion completely changed on February 12, 2025, I’d had a half-day assignment at a nearby school, and had bragged to the staff that I was about to order some food from Chef China, “my favorite place,” stating that they give such generous portions that the food will last about 3-4 days. The staff were excited and took down their number. Around noon, I happily went to order the egg foo young, sweet sour soup, and chicken chop suey that came with crispy chips, fried rice, and an egg roll. I enjoyed several small meals. On Friday night I went for the last serving. Luckily, it was literally the last scoop put on my plate, but in the far corner of the styrofoam container where the chicken chop suey was, was a curled up long strand of black hair. I couldn’t stop gagging, and threw out a huge plate of the chicken chop suey, and the egg foo young. I am so disgusted that I will never eat here again, even if the food is good. I don’t think I’ll be able to eat any Chinese food anytime soon. I read their reviews. Most are good, but several are negative. One review said they too found a long strand of black hair. Last time I checked, hairnets are supposed to be worn. It’s sad because it was the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. I will be letting the staff I bragged to about what I found. In fact, it was the school that told me years back how great the food is. No one wants to find hair in their food! You have lost a good customer. You couldn’t make it up by offering me a free meal. No thanks. I did call the restaurant last night, and the girl only offered to say something to the kitchen staff. A refund would’ve been a nice offer. Debbie

I ordered the egg flower soup, egg rolls and pork fried rice. The rice was great, a huge portion as well. The soup was also in a large container. They also gave me some sort of fried chips, I don't know what they were but they were good. This could easily feed 2 to 3 people and the cost for all was around $23.
