About Chang Luong Restaurant

Welcome to Chang Luong Restaurant, a distinctive Chinese restaurant nestled on Durant Avenue in Berkeley. As a valued member of the Chinese Restaurant category, Chang Luong Restaurant offers local users a unique opportunity to explore the authentic and often spicy flavors of North Chinese cuisine. Located at 2517 Durant Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704, USA, this establishment is described by patrons as a "hidden gem," suggesting a delightful and perhaps less widely known culinary treasure waiting to be discovered. You can contact them at (510) 703-9404 or their mobile number, +1 510-703-9404, for inquiries or to plan your visit. While it may not boast extensive online publicity, the positive word-of-mouth from those who have experienced its offerings speaks volumes about its quality and authenticity.

Chang Luong Restaurant presents itself as a family-run establishment, which often translates to a warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with a personal touch in the cooking and service. This type of restaurant frequently emphasizes traditional recipes and a commitment to providing a genuine taste of home-style cuisine. For local users seeking an alternative to the more common Cantonese or Americanized Chinese fare, Chang Luong Restaurant offers a chance to delve into the bold and distinctive flavors of North China.

The environment at Chang Luong Restaurant is characterized as conducive to a "chill dining-out experience." While one reviewer noted "slightly dim lighting and an interesting atmosphere," this suggests a unique and perhaps more intimate setting compared to brightly lit, bustling eateries. The ambiance seems to prioritize comfort and a relaxed dining pace, allowing patrons to savor their meals and enjoy the company. The mention of ample space for families and large groups is a significant feature, making it an ideal choice for gatherings and celebrations where authentic North Chinese food is desired.

Regarding accessibility, it's important to note that Chang Luong Restaurant is located on the second floor of the building, requiring customers to take the stairs past a Korean restaurant on the first floor. While the climb is described as "not difficult," this unfortunately means that the restaurant is not wheelchair-friendly. Local users with mobility considerations should be aware of this limitation when planning their visit.

In terms of service, one reviewer highlighted that the service was "fast," despite mentioning a potential wait for the food initially. This suggests that while dishes are likely prepared fresh to order, the efficiency of the service ensures that the overall dining experience remains positive. The reviewer also noted that the chef and assumed owner was "nice," reinforcing the impression of a friendly, family-run establishment where customer satisfaction is a priority.

A primary feature of Chang Luong Restaurant is its focus on authentic spicy cuisine from North China. This is a significant draw for those who appreciate bold and flavorful dishes with a noticeable kick. North Chinese cuisine is known for its liberal use of garlic, chili peppers, vinegar, and wheat-based staples like noodles and dumplings. If you are a local user in Berkeley with a penchant for spicy food and a desire to explore regional Chinese specialties, Chang Luong Restaurant is presented as a "good place to start" this culinary adventure.

The fact that the food is described as "Amazing!!!" by a satisfied customer is a strong testament to the quality and flavor of the dishes served at Chang Luong Restaurant. The reviewer also mentioned that the food is "being cooked right behind you right after you order," indicating a commitment to freshness and transparency in their food preparation. This open cooking style can be reassuring for diners who value knowing their meal is prepared with care and fresh ingredients.

An important practical detail for potential diners is the payment options accepted at Chang Luong Restaurant. Currently, they accept payment via cash or Venmo. This is a crucial piece of information for local users to be aware of when planning their visit, as they will need to ensure they have one of these payment methods available. The absence of credit or debit card acceptance might be a consideration for some diners.

In conclusion, Chang Luong Restaurant offers a unique and authentic North Chinese dining experience in Berkeley. As a family-run establishment located on the second floor of a building on Durant Avenue, it provides a "chill" atmosphere with ample space for groups. The focus on freshly cooked, often spicy dishes from North China is a significant draw, with customers raving about the amazing flavors. While it's important to note the second-floor location and the cash or Venmo payment policy, Chang Luong Restaurant stands out as a "hidden gem" for local users seeking a genuine taste of a less common regional Chinese cuisine in a welcoming setting. If you're in Berkeley and looking to explore beyond the familiar, Chang Luong Restaurant promises a flavorful and authentic culinary journey to North China.

This is a hidden gem on Durant Ave. The restaurant looks like it's a family-run place that's good for a chill dining-out experience (there's a wait for the food but it's worth it). If you're looking for authentic spicy cuisine from North China, this is a good place to start. There's plenty of space for families and large groups. The restaurant is on the second floor and you'll need to take the stairs past the Korean restaurant. It's not a difficult climb but it also means the place is not wheelchair-friendly. Payment accepted via cash or Venmo.

The food was Amazing!!! Sure it had slightly dim lighting and an interesting atmosphere, but if you want good food, at a good price, being cooked right behind you right after you order, this is the place to go. Service was fast, the chef and assumed owner was nice!

Service is bad. I guess the business owner does everything since he’s the only one serving and cooking at the restaurant. This business seems to avoid taxes and fees since you can only by cash or Venmo and there is no receipt. He’s got a bad attitude and doesn’t even talk. When we got there, there was only one table yet the wait for our food was like 30 minutes and it was not hot at all. When we asked what was the specialty for the vegetables for the day, he simply responded “it’s a plant he’s growing”?? The environment was unsanitary as well and only a few lights were on. It was like eating in a haunted house. What threw me off was when we asked for the check he rolled his eyes and didn’t say anything or think you after we paid. I mean, if you are so cheap and don’t even follow regulatory rules why would you even care to open a business in the first place?

I have to say it is one of the best crispy fried pork with sauce(溜肉段) I tried. I don’t mind the service. The owner is a interesting guy. I first asked if it is (authentic) north-eastern cuisine, because the owner is speaking southern accent. The owner is super impatient and asked me to the name of the restaurant. He also keeps complaining he is too tired. Anyway, would definitely come again.

Above average and price is acceptable. Tofu veg bowl is the best. Can not pay with credit card. And don't expect any service even the tip is fixed.
