About Casa Del Mofongo

Casa Del Mofongo is a restaurant located at 553 Main St, Bethlehem, PA 18018, USA. While categorized under Chinese Restaurants, customer reviews indicate it serves Puerto Rican cuisine, with mofongo as a specialty. They can be contacted at (484) 893-4808 or +1 484-893-4808.

Many first-time visitors have had an "amazing" experience, finding everything they ordered to be "delicious." Specific dishes praised include the chicken empanada, the mini mofongos, bistec with veggies and sweet plantains, and the grilled pork chops in the house creole sauce. One reviewer expressed regret at the distance, wishing they could order their way through the entire menu and highly recommending others to try it.

The mofongo itself is described as a "garlic lover’s dream" with a great texture to the plantain. However, one reviewer found the chicharrones (pork rinds) to be "rather gravel-like and tough," suggesting opting for a different protein. Unlike the typically dry nature of mofongo, the version here is noted to be "moist" and served in "gigantic" portions, potentially enough for 1.5 meals.

The food is generally considered "very good," especially given the price point. They offer "$10 lunch specials," such as rice with a quarter of a chicken, indicating affordability for daytime dining.

However, a significant issue raised in the reviews is the service. Some customers perceive it as "unfriendly, uncaring, and unwelcoming," suggesting this might be a reason for customers not returning. Another notable service aspect is the restaurant's policy of only selling bottled water for $2, denying requests for tap water. While the immediate profit might be small, some customers feel "ripped off" by this practice, potentially impacting their decision to return.

Based on these reviews, Casa Del Mofongo in Bethlehem, PA, offers delicious and generously portioned Puerto Rican food, particularly the mofongo (with a caveat about the chicharrones). The prices are reasonable, especially the lunch specials. However, potential customers should be aware of reported issues with the service being perceived as unfriendly and the mandatory purchase of $2 bottled water instead of tap water.

The environment is not explicitly described. Services include dine-in and potentially takeaway (implied by the desire to "order our way through the menu"). Features include authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, particularly mofongo, large portions, and affordable prices, especially at lunchtime. A notable service policy is the mandatory purchase of bottled water.

This was our first experience here. It was amazing. Everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered a chicken empanada, the mini mofongos, Bistec with veggies and sweet plantains, and the grilled pork chops in the house creole sauce. It's a shame we are so far away. We would definitely be ordering our way through the menu. I definitely recommend stopping in here and giving something a try. It was a great experience.

The mofongo is a garlic lover’s dream. The plantain itself has great texture, but the chicharrones were rather gravel-like and tough, so I’d recommend getting a different protein. Mofongo has a tendency to be extremely dry; the one here was moist. It’s a gigantic ball of starch that’s enough for 1.5 meals. Food here is generally very good, especially for the price. They have $10 lunch specials such as the rice with a quarter of chicken. The main issues are with service. I suspect customers are not coming back because of it. By American standards, service can come across as unfriendly, uncaring, and unwelcoming. The restaurant also insists that you buy bottled water; they will deny a request for tap water. If water were $1 it’d be more acceptable, but they charge $2 for a bottle. Sure they’ll get a quick two bucks but people will feel ripped off and choose to not return.

Recommend: creamy garlic sauce Good: pernil, trifongo, maduros mofongo, shrimp The shrimp which came in a bowl with the creamy garlic sauce was lovely, I'm not sure what dictates whether it's in a bowl or free standing but the garlic sauce for the pernil (roast pork) was just oil and garlic whereas the shrimp had it on top. The trifongo was good but I found the maduros a little sweet for my taste but others really liked that they were moist. I could tell the plantain would be a little bit more dry and crunchy, I think next time I would personally go for the yucca. Shrimp were cooked nicely but had no seasonings on their own. We did not see the lunch specials which are highlighted in a blackboard on the wall. Water is bottled water. Staff is difficult to get a hold of.
