About Buffet Star
Welcome to Buffet Star, a Chinese buffet restaurant located at 2300 W Mercury Blvd in Hampton, Virginia. As a Chinese restaurant operating in the buffet category, Buffet Star offers an all-you-can-eat experience with a wide selection of Chinese dishes, catering to individuals and families looking for variety and quantity at a set price. Situated in Hampton, it aims to provide a convenient dining option for those seeking a diverse range of Chinese cuisine in a buffet setting.
Customer reviews of Buffet Star present a somewhat mixed perspective on the overall dining experience. One visitor, who stopped by after a long drive, mentioned that they got "exactly what they bargained for" in terms of finding simple Chinese food. They noted the price of $14.99 per person and appreciated the availability of lots of vegetables and proteins. However, they found the overall flavor of the food to be not exceptionally good. A significant concern was the discovery of a rotten piece of pineapple on one of the trays, which negatively impacted their appetite.
Another reviewer expressed a sentiment that the food quality at Buffet Star has declined over the past two years, suggesting that their previous experiences were better. On a more recent visit, this customer reported finding a piece of plastic, about the size of a penny, in the fried rice. While they acknowledged that the staff handled the situation with a good attitude, praising the service in this specific instance, they indicated that there were not many other positive aspects to their experience. They noted that the food was lukewarm, despite their visit occurring during a less busy time, implying that the food could have been kept at a better temperature. This reviewer concluded by expressing hope that the quality of the restaurant would improve in the future, indicating a willingness to return under better circumstances.
These reviews highlight a potential inconsistency in the food quality and freshness at Buffet Star. While the variety and quantity of food may be appealing, particularly at the stated price point, concerns have been raised about the flavor, temperature, and the presence of non-food items in the dishes. The incident with the rotten pineapple and the plastic in the fried rice are significant issues that potential customers should be aware of.
Despite the concerns about food quality, one reviewer did commend the service when an issue arose, noting the staff's good attitude in addressing the discovery of plastic in the food. This suggests that while there might be shortcomings in the food preparation or handling, the staff is responsive and tries to resolve issues when they occur. However, the overall impact of food quality problems can overshadow positive service interactions.
As a buffet restaurant, the environment of Buffet Star is likely characterized by a large dining area with various stations offering different categories of food, such as appetizers, main courses, sides, and desserts. The focus is typically on self-service, allowing customers to choose and serve themselves from the available dishes. Buffet restaurants often cater to families and groups, providing a casual and bustling atmosphere. While specific details about the décor or ambiance of Buffet Star are not mentioned in the reviews, customers can generally expect a functional space designed to accommodate a large number of diners and food selections.
The primary service offered by Buffet Star is an all-you-can-eat buffet. Customers pay a fixed price ($14.99 per person, as mentioned in one review) and can sample a wide variety of dishes. The service model typically involves minimal interaction with staff beyond initial seating, drink orders, and clearing of plates, except when specific issues arise, as noted in one of the reviews. Takeout options are not explicitly mentioned in the provided feedback, but it is possible that Buffet Star offers takeout by weight or by container; interested customers should inquire directly about this service.
A key feature of Buffet Star is the variety of Chinese dishes available, including vegetables and proteins, catering to different dietary preferences and tastes. The buffet format itself is a draw for those who enjoy sampling multiple items. However, the reviews indicate that while the selection might be extensive, the overall flavor of the food may not be exceptional, and there are potential concerns about the freshness and temperature of some items. The incident with the rotten pineapple suggests a lack of attention to detail in maintaining the quality of the food on display.
Promotional information is not included in the provided customer reviews. Buffet restaurants sometimes offer discounts for children, seniors, or during certain days or times. Local advertising or online listings might also provide information on any ongoing deals.
In conclusion, Buffet Star in Hampton, VA, offers a Chinese buffet experience with a wide variety of dishes at a set price. While it may provide a cost-effective option for those seeking quantity and variety, recent customer reviews raise concerns about the overall flavor, freshness, and temperature of the food, as well as isolated incidents of finding foreign objects or spoiled items. The service, when issues arise, has been noted as good. Potential customers should weigh the appeal of an all-you-can-eat format against the reported inconsistencies in food quality. Customer Reviews
We visited buffet star after a long drive from Philly and just wanted some simply Chinese food. Honestly, we got exactly what we bargained for. For 14.99 per person, we got lots of veggies and proteins, but overall the flavor is just not super good. There was one piece of pineapple on the tray that was straight up rotten, it kinda spoiled my appetite once I saw it.
In my opinion food used to be better, and has gone down the past 2 years. Today, we found a piece of a plastic size of a penny in the fried rice. Staff came and took care of it with a good attitude, love the service, but aside from that there aren’t many positive words. Food was lukewarm (was in at a not so busy hour but still could’ve been kept better) I hope to come back to this place when better.
A major problem at this place is Susan, the manager. When there is a problem at this establishment, the issue gets escalated to the manager, Susan. Susan seemingly adds to the issue. At first she appears nice, but then you realize she is part of the problem not a solution. When this woman spoke to me I believed what she told me. Then, it became apparent that she was not willing to address the situation at all. As far as the overall appearance of the restaurant, it looks amazing but be careful of the food. If your timing isn't just right the food temperature is enough to make you sick. If you come here the best and safest choice would be to have your food cooked in front of you on the grill to ensure that it is at the appropriate, safe temperature to eat. Some of the foods on the buffet tables that are supposed to be hot, don't be fooled from the steam underneath. It does not mean the food is at the appropriate temperature for human consumption. My goal here is not too bash this restaurant, but to be transparent with others about my experience here.
Might be the best buffet I have ever been to. Delicious!
The staff were pleasant and kept up with taking plates quickly. So many buffet tables. 5 plus the Mongolian Grill and Sushi station. The Lo Mein and Mei Fun were very tasty. A tiny bit cold but that’s to be expected at a buffet. They are constantly up keeping the tables , which is nice. They have a large salad and dessert selection. There is something for everyone; vegetarian , pescatarian and meat eaters. Excellent choice during lent if you’re going to eat out. I was not a fan of the olives or the pickles, but that is just a flavor preference. The Eggrolls and Egg Foo Young were delicious. Highly recommend. Quality food and many options with affordable prices. We plan on going back again next week for the dinner buffet.
