Brightwok Kitchen and Catering Intro
Brightwok Kitchen and Catering, located at 631 N State St in Chicago, presents itself as a Chinese restaurant that specializes in customizable Asian-inspired bowls. A significant feature highlighted by customers is the availability of many vegan-friendly options, making it an appealing choice for those with dietary restrictions or preferences. The restaurant follows a build-your-own-bowl concept, typically starting with brown rice as a base grain, followed by a choice of protein, various vegetables, and an Asian-inspired sauce such as tahini-sesame dressing or chili oil.
Customers have generally found the food to be very good, with one individual even ordering from Brightwok multiple times during a short stay in Chicago, including delivery. The use of local corn in some dishes has been noted as a positive addition. The restaurant also demonstrates attention to detail by accommodating online order requests, such as omitting onions.
However, some customers have found certain bowls, particularly tofu-based options, to be overly saucy and oily, suggesting that requesting "light on sauce and oil" might be advisable for those who prefer less richness. Despite this, the tofu itself has been praised, and the variety of vegetable options is appreciated. A unique side offering is the fried plantains, which have been enjoyed as an accompaniment to the bowls.
The service at Brightwok Kitchen and Catering is described as really friendly and helpful. Interestingly, even when dining in, the food is served in takeout containers. This is seen as convenient for those who may not finish their meal but also potentially wasteful for those who discard the containers immediately after eating in the restaurant.
Beyond individual meals, the name "Brightwok Kitchen and Catering" suggests that the establishment also offers catering services, although specific details about this aspect are not provided in the reviews.
In summary, Brightwok Kitchen and Catering offers a customizable and flavorful Asian bowl experience with a strong emphasis on vegan-friendly choices. The service is friendly, and the food is generally well-received, though some dishes may be heavily sauced or oily. The practice of serving dine-in meals in takeout containers is a notable aspect of their service style. For local users seeking a customizable Asian meal with ample vegan options, Brightwok on N State St is a viable choice. SO GOOD. I tried this place my first night in Chicago and went back (delivery) for lunch and dinner the next day too. The sesame bowl could have done with more sauce, but otherwise everything was so good. Local corn is a great addition. I had a BYOB with the cashew sauce, and a golden curry bowl as well. They left off the onions as requested when placing my online order. Can't wait to come back and have it again
They have a lot of vegan friendly options which made it appealing and easy for me to build my own bowl. Their bowls follow a similar structure of brown rice as a grain, choice of protein, then topped with veggies and some type of Asian inspired sauce such as a tahini-sesame dressing or their chili oil. I enjoyed the two tofu bowls that we had here although I found them to be overly saucy and oily. I would suggest requesting to go light on both if you are able. Their tofu was good and I appreciated the many veggie options. Plus their fried plantains were also a nice side to accompany the bowls. Service here was really friendly and helpful, and even when you dine in, your bowls will be served in takeout containers. This is helpful if you aren't able to finish your food in one sitting but seems wasteful when you toss it out right afterwards.
We grabbed some food from Brightwok while on vacation because it was located near our hotel. I got it back to the room to feed our family to find the tofu burnt and the edamame was spoiled and smelled awful (so bad we had to throw it away in the lobby trash can) I’ve tried reaching out by complaint form, feedback email, and calling the store with no response on a refund. We were advised the owner lives in NY but someone would follow up with us. We threw away all of the food and picked up something from True Food with a much better experience.
For $18 the amount of food that you get here is surprisingly small if anything when it comes to measuring out, bowls the consistency is not there. Its odd that online it’s 3 extra for steak but in-store it was $5. The quality of the food isn’t bad, but for price per serving there are better options up and down the street.
Ordered sweet potato fritter as a separate side and got nearly an empty box. The BYOB was good, selected the option of half greens and half brown rice as base, got barely any greens. Will not be ordering again. The taste overall was good, the food was hot. 2 stars for that.
