About Brandy Ho's Hunan Food
Brandy Ho's Hunan Food, situated at 217 Columbus Ave in the North Beach area of San Francisco, offers local diners a taste of the distinctive cuisine from the Hunan province of China. As a Chinese Restaurant in a city known for its diverse culinary scene, Brandy Ho's aims to bring the bold and often spicy flavors of Hunan to its patrons.
Upon entering Brandy Ho's, customers might find a spacious dining area. One reviewer noted the surprising experience of being the only patrons present during their visit, which they linked to a general lack of activity in that particular area off Grant and Kearny Streets. However, the spaciousness itself suggests the restaurant has the capacity to accommodate a significant number of diners, potentially making it suitable for larger groups or those seeking a less crowded environment at certain times.
The primary focus of Brandy Ho's is its Hunan cuisine. Hunan food is known for its liberal use of chili peppers, garlic, and shallots, often resulting in dishes that are both spicy and deeply flavorful. According to one customer, the food at Brandy Ho's was indeed "tasty" and "delicious when mixed with rice," although they also pointed out that it tended to be "too salty." This suggests that while the flavors are appealing, diners might want to be mindful of the salt content and consider enjoying dishes with rice to balance the seasoning.
The menu at Brandy Ho's appears to offer a variety of entrees and appetizers, including vegetarian options. One order consisted of three entrees and two vegetarian appetizers, indicating a willingness to cater to different dietary preferences. However, the reviewer noted that the meal was "expensive," with the total cost reaching approximately $30 per person for this particular order. This suggests that while the food might be flavorful, it might be positioned at a higher price point compared to some other Chinese restaurants in the area.
In terms of service, Brandy Ho's seems to excel. The reviewer who found the food salty also praised the service as "great," describing their server as "very nice." Additionally, they mentioned that the owner provided "good recommendations," indicating a personal touch and helpfulness from the management. This positive feedback on service suggests that diners can expect a friendly and welcoming experience from the staff.
Another reviewer highlighted a "lunch special" that they found to be filling and delightful. This special included fried dumplings and cold noodles as starters, followed by a vegetarian tofu dish served with white rice. The mention of a lunch special suggests that Brandy Ho's may offer more affordable options during lunchtime, catering to those seeking a satisfying meal at a potentially lower cost than dinner entrees.
Interestingly, the same reviewer mentioned a somewhat unusual policy of charging non-customers five dollars for using the toilets, drawing a comparison to airline charges. They also humorously noted that Chinese tea is not included unless consumed in the bathroom, implying a playful, albeit perhaps slightly odd, approach to certain aspects of their service. This policy regarding restroom usage is a unique feature that potential customers might want to be aware of.
The reference to the spaciousness of the restaurant was reiterated by the reviewer who enjoyed the lunch special, further supporting the idea that Brandy Ho's offers a roomy dining environment. This could be a significant advantage for those looking for a comfortable and less cramped setting.

In conclusion, Brandy Ho's Hunan Food on Columbus Avenue in San Francisco offers a taste of authentic Hunan cuisine in a spacious setting. While some customers have found the dishes to be on the saltier side and the overall cost to be relatively high, the food is generally described as tasty and flavorful, especially when enjoyed with rice. The service appears to be a strong point, with friendly staff and helpful recommendations from the owner. The existence of a potentially more affordable lunch special is also a notable feature. Potential diners might find the restroom policy and the possibility of a less lively atmosphere at certain times to be factors to consider. For those seeking to explore the distinct flavors of Hunan province and appreciate friendly service in a spacious environment, Brandy Ho's Hunan Food could be a worthwhile culinary adventure in San Francisco's North Beach.

When my family and I walked in here, we were surprised to discover that we were the only people in the whole restaurant. It unfortunately reflected much of Chinatown too- there wasn't too much life when we went off Grant/Kearny St. The food was tasty- too salty but delicious when mixed with rice- but expensive. We ordered three entrees, two veggie appetizers, and rice but ended up paying $30 a person. Service was great- our server was very nice and the owner gave us some good recommendations.
Spacious restaurant with a lunch special that fills you with delights : fried dumpling and cold noodles to start ; followed by a vegetarian tofu with white rice; They charge five bucks for non customers using toilets. And that is what airlines charge too. Chinese tea not included unless you drink it in the bathroom and then it’s free. They want you to use the bathroom a lot .
Amazing! The best Chinese food I’ve had in 15 years!!!! The restaurant is in China Town, it was clean, friendly staff. The owner spoke to me for a while and was describing his food. I could see the passion and love for good quality food in his expression and eyes. I will be returning to Brandy Ho’s Hunan Food. -Dr. Menendez
Went out to lunch to Brandy Ho’s Hunan Food. Had the lunch special with spicy beef and spring onions with white sauce. Also enjoyed pork and cabbage steamed dumplings appetizer. Lunch plate comes with main, hot and sour soup, scallion pancake, and noodles with peanut sauce. Freshly prepared food, open kitchen, very clean, good price, and good service too. Looking forward to going again!
This place used to be consistently good. On my visit tonight for dinner, portions are small and everything was way too salty or simple sweet sauces dominating dishes. A lot of filler onions and peppers instead of meat or seafood. Hot tea was a microwaved mug of water with a teabag in it, no after dinner fortune cookies or orange slices for the kids. Staff was pleasant but clearly cutting corners on food in this once good spot.
