Based on the insightful reviews from real customers, Bowl of Fortune appears to be a culinary gem for those seeking authentic Chinese flavors. One reviewer enthusiastically recommends several dishes, including the "eggplant with garlic," the "hot pot combo" (noting its variety of proteins), and the "lamb with cumin," all described as "very delicious." Furthermore, this customer praises the "milk tea" for its authentic Chinese flavor and shares a delightful anecdote about a Chinese friend who confirmed the food's authenticity, stating, "The food is Chinese Chinese." The fact that the staff frequently communicates in Chinese with Chinese-speaking customers is also highlighted as a strong indicator of the restaurant's authenticity.
A significant feature of Bowl of Fortune, as mentioned by this reviewer, is the availability of a wide range of both spicy and non-spicy food options. This caters to a diverse palate, ensuring that there is something for everyone, regardless of their spice preference. For those who enjoy the fiery flavors of authentic Szechuan or other regional Chinese cuisines, Bowl of Fortune seems to be a promising destination.
Another customer shares a positive recent experience, mentioning a visit to Bowl of Fortune where they "really enjoyed" their time. This reviewer specifically notes that their daughter was "fascinated" and loved the food. This suggests that Bowl of Fortune has a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere. The staff is described as "very friendly and super fest," indicating a warm and efficient service. Adding to the positive experience, the reviewer mentions that their daughter received "Free Ice Cream on Paloma," suggesting a kind gesture and a potential for special treats, especially for younger diners. The reviewer also describes Paloma as "very Polite and careful," further emphasizing the positive interaction with the staff.
While the majority of the feedback is overwhelmingly positive regarding the authenticity and taste of the food, one reviewer did mention a couple of areas for potential improvement. They noted that "the service is slow" and that "the technological backdrops in the background need some updates." However, this reviewer's appreciation for the "authentic food" was so strong that they stated, "I definitely want to come back." This suggests that while there might be minor shortcomings in terms of service speed or the ambiance created by the background technology, the quality and authenticity of the cuisine are the primary draw and are compelling enough for a return visit.
Combining these reviews, Bowl of Fortune stands out as a Chinese restaurant in Wheeling that prioritizes authentic Chinese flavors, offering a diverse menu with both spicy and non-spicy choices. The positive feedback regarding specific dishes like eggplant with garlic, hot pot combo, and lamb with cumin, along with the authentic milk tea, indicates a high standard of culinary preparation. The restaurant also appears to be family-friendly, with at least one reviewer highlighting their child's positive experience and the friendly nature of the crew. The mention of a free ice cream treat suggests a welcoming and attentive approach to customers, particularly families with children.
While one review noted slower service and outdated technology, the strong emphasis on the authentic and delicious food suggests that these might be secondary concerns for patrons primarily focused on the culinary experience. The willingness of a customer to return despite these minor drawbacks speaks volumes about the quality of the food itself.

Eggplant with garlic, hot pot combo (with lots of variety of protein) and lamb with cumin were all very delicious. The milk tea was authentic Chinese flavor. The food is Chinese Chinese said my Chinese friend who dined with me. Haha. The staff spoke Chinese to many Chinese speaking customers that are good sign to this place being authentic. Lots of spicy food options here as well as non spicy ones to choose too. The service is slow and the technological backdrops in the background need some updates but for the authentic food I definitely want to come back.
Yesterday we visited Bowl of Fortune. We really enjoyed, my daughter was fascinated. She love the food. All the crew were very friendly and super fest. She hada Free Ice Cream on Paloma. She is very Polite and careful.
We’ve been here a few times and are still so happy to have authentic Szechuan Chinese here in the Northern burbs! It’s about time!! So, I will say this, there can be some “misses” on the menu, specifically if you try and stick to American- style Chinese or you aren’t prepared for the level of authentic spice in some of the dishes. We’ve tried quite a few and here’s what our experience was like: House Special Beef Noodle Soup - Outstanding! The broth, which is more like hotpot broth and less like drinkable broth, is a bit oily and perfectly spicy if it is served the authentic way, but it is not too spicy, so don’t be afraid to try it. The beef is super flavorful and compliments the noodles perfectly. Are they handmade noodles? Not likely, but they are still really great at soaking up that rich broth flavor. Spicy Cumin Lamb - we both did the Mark Weins face with our first bite. Need I say more??? Get this! Stir Fried Beef with Peppers - this is a miss for us, too bland. If you are coming here for something that isn’t spicy, this may work for you. Spicy & Sour Sliced Potatoes- this is a staple dish we order, so perfect every time and refreshing when you are ordering other spicy dishes. Highly recommend! Green Peppercorns with Crisp Fish Filet- this was good, but the spice level quickly became too much for us. Mapo Tofu - really good, crazy spicy, but my husband is addicted to it. Tofu is Salted Egg Yolk - odd flavor, not our style, perhaps this is an acquired taste? Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - this is usually one of our staples, but the balance was off when we ordered. Far too much vinegar in the sauce to enjoy. Yangzhou Fried Rice - order this with some of the dishes we have raved about above, like the Beef Noodle Soup or a meat dish. It is such a great compliment to the spicy dishes and mixed well with everything. Good wok hei in it as well! Twice Cooked Pork - amazing when you take some of the pork and green onion and mix it with the Yangzhou Fried Rice. I definitely recommend those two together. The pork by itself can taste (and smell) a little too “porky” but when mixed makes a perfect accompaniment to the fried rice. Sesame Balls - a table of the most adorable Chinese ladies, who are originally from Szechuan, fed us some of these. It was so sweet of them. I was, as usual, the only non-Asian in the place, so they wanted to share their dessert. The sesame balls are incredible, so save room for a slightly sweet after-meal treat. Overall, we highly recommend this place. The staff is so friendly, the food is authentic and amazing, and you’ll find yourself addicted to those peppercorns pretty quickly! 🥰
This lovely restaurant has just opened and hopefully they stay for a long time. The Bowl of Fortune has a fantastic selection of good eats. Two things to note: 1) Service is really slow, so be patient. Don't go if you're on a time crunch. 2) No alcohol but you can bring your own or there's a wine shop in the mall. All around, the dumplings and pot stickers were fabulous. Order them 😉
I went to bowl of fortune for the first time Sunday night and we stumbled across it while going on a drive and stopping at dollar tree. I am so happy we gave this restaurant a try. It is my new favorite place to eat. Their food is fresh and flavorful. I felt like I could taste the love that was put into cooking our food. I ordered the house special beef soup and dumplings as an appetizer. I will just say this place is a hidden gem. Their food is authentic Chinese and I have never tasted a better dumpling in my life. They have good food and good prices and we got our food pretty quickly and it arrived steaming hot. I feel like the pictures speak for themself. Definitely should check them out!
