About Bo Lings
Located at 8973 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66212, USA, Bo Lings is a well-established Chinese restaurant with a long history in the Kansas City metropolitan area, having served diners since 1981. It is part of a family-owned enterprise with multiple locations across the metro. For inquiries or reservations, Bo Lings can be reached at (913) 341-1718 or via mobile at +1 913-341-1718. Operating within the "Chinese Restaurant" category, Bo Lings is known for offering a comprehensive range of authentic Chinese dishes, including a notable dim sum program.
The environment at Bo Lings, specifically at the Metcalf Ave location, has been described as having a "tasteful and calming atmosphere," despite being amid the bustle of the 135th and Metcalf area. It is characterized as a "fine Chinese dining" establishment, suggesting a more refined setting than a typical casual eatery. The restaurant features an "impressively decorated" interior with a "Chinese/oriental theme" but with a modern styling, avoiding the outdated feel of some older establishments. This thoughtful decor aims to provide a pleasant and inviting ambiance for diners. Furthermore, the Metcalf Ave location offers two private dining rooms, each with a round table and Lazy Susans, ideal for parties ranging from six to thirty guests. This feature highlights Bo Lings' capacity to host special events and larger gatherings, enhancing its appeal for various occasions.
Service at Bo Lings receives mixed reviews, indicating variability in customer experience. Positive feedback highlights "attentive service" and instances where staff are professional and efficient, particularly during busy times like Sunday dim sum. However, there are also accounts of service being less than ideal. One customer described a waitress as "very annoyed" and repeatedly reiterating "dim sum" when asked for clarification on the menu. This suggests a potential lack of patience or clear communication in some interactions. Additionally, on a busy occasion like Mother's Day, a discrepancy in quoted wait times (45 minutes over the phone vs. 20 minutes upon arrival) suggests strategies that might be perceived as discouraging customers. Despite these inconsistencies, the restaurant's long-standing presence and generally positive reputation suggest that efficient service is a goal, particularly in managing the flow of customers and food delivery.
The culinary features of Bo Lings are extensive and aim to provide an authentic and diverse Chinese dining experience. A significant highlight is their dim sum, a Cantonese tradition that Bo Lings was among the first to introduce to the Midwest, reportedly since 1987. Dim sum is available daily at the Overland Park location and includes a variety of traditional small dishes like dumplings, buns, rolls, meats, and other side dishes. Popular dim sum items include homemade dumplings with various fillings and steamed or baked pork buns, along with Shao Mai and steamed roasted pork buns. The dim sum menu, however, has been noted by some customers to be pictorial with only dish names, lacking ingredient descriptions, which can make navigation challenging for those unfamiliar with the dishes.
Beyond dim sum, Bo Lings offers a comprehensive main menu that spans popular Chinese favorites from various regions, including Sichuan, Cantonese, and Mandarin cuisines. Dishes are described as "authentic, fresh, and innovative," with a commitment to using the freshest ingredients and making all dishes to order. The menu includes categories such as pork/beef dishes (e.g., Mongolian Beef, Beef with Broccoli, Sichuan Peppercorn Beef), soups (Hot and Sour Soup, Chicken Wonton Soup, Egg Drop Soup), house specialties (e.g., General Tso's Chicken, Chicken & Shrimp Hunan Style, Beijing Shrimp), seafood (e.g., Gong Bao Shrimp and Scallops, Orange Peel Shrimp, Shrimp with Cashews), and a wide array of appetizers (e.g., Grilled Chicken Satay, Crispy Eggplant, Crisply Shrimp Rolls, Vietnamese Style Spring Rolls). They also cater to various dietary preferences, offering clearly marked vegetarian and vegan options, including Sichuan wonder tofu, spinach with garlic, vegetable lettuce wraps, and veganizable vegetable fried rice and moo shu.
However, recent customer reviews indicate a potential decline in food quality for some dishes. One long-time patron noted that the "quality of the food has gone down hill." Specific complaints included "undercooked and gummy" wontons in the soup and "flavorless" lettuce wraps that required excessive soy sauce to be edible. This suggests that while Bo Lings generally maintains a high standard, there might be inconsistencies or a perceived shift in the quality of certain menu items. Despite these critiques, other recent feedback mentions "loved what we got" and "Sushi was good. Crispy beef and general tso was delish and the lemon cake was insane," indicating that the overall dining experience can still be positive for many.
Regarding promotional information, Bo Lings does not explicitly list ongoing public promotions in the provided customer reviews. However, its long-standing presence since 1981, multiple locations, and reputation for authentic dim sum and diverse Chinese cuisine serve as a strong, implicit promotion. The availability of private dining rooms for events also acts as a promotional feature for corporate gatherings, family celebrations, or other special occasions. Testimonials from private dining guests, praising "award-winning Chinese cuisine, impeccable service, and an unforgettable experience," along with specific commendations for decorations, setup, food, and service, highlight the restaurant's capability to deliver high-quality event experiences. These positive word-of-mouth accounts and the restaurant's established brand in the community contribute significantly to its continued patronage, demonstrating that its offerings and reputation are its primary promotional tools.
In conclusion, Bo Lings at 8973 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS, is a well-regarded Chinese restaurant known for its authentic dim sum program and a broad menu of Chinese classics. It offers a tastefully decorated dining environment, including private rooms for events, and aims to provide comprehensive service. While it has a strong reputation and many positive experiences, recent feedback suggests potential inconsistencies in food quality and service that prospective diners should consider. Nonetheless, Bo Lings remains a significant player in the Kansas City Chinese dining scene, catering to a wide range of tastes and occasions.

My husband and I used to eat here years ago and we loved it but boy has the quality of the food gone down hill since we moved away ten years ago. The wontons in the wonton soup were very undercooked and gummy and were pretty much inedible. The lettuce wraps had absolutely no flavor and I had to practically drown it soy sauce just so I could force it down.
When I called on Mother's Day, they said it would be a 45 mi but when we arrived 5 mins later, it was a 20 min wait. I assume they said that to discourage people from comming. Apparently there are 2 kinds of menus, the dim sum menu is what we were given, which only has pucs and the name of the dish, no ingredients or descriptors. No other option until we asked. And at that rate, the menu was slightly unclear, but not un-navagable. The waitress just seemed very annoyed, and just kept repeating "dim sum" when I asked what that is 3 or 4 times. Food was good tho
Waited 30 mintute for seating which is normal.Ordered 10 item for dim sum..5 came out...waited longer nothing else come out which fine. Then they came out with a bill consisting of 10 item and only 5 was brought out. Tried to to be polite and told them that.. 5 minutes later another gal came out with no food but another bill...watch out for them when you pay...I'm asian...but this place is new and nice...but they just want to bill you first before bringing your food. I hate to give bad review...but the gal checking out up front have no customer services but only want to charge you.. Waste of money... Wow....just wow...now you came back and said 9 item was brought out..stop BS..Yes 2 more item was brought out while I was paying at the front..when I walk back to the table my kid didn't know and touch the food that was brought out late. Then other lady bring it back in saying it was not paid..I hope you guys didn't bring it back in and give it to someone else on that order..disgusting...That lady should of just left the dish there until my kid finish it bc the host said just enjoy it...I don't mine pay it..just that no point of sitting enjoy the meal.don't turn the narrative around but instead use that time and train your worker better is my advice.
Always a fun experience and delicious food! We’ve been going for dim sum for over 30 years! First, going to the Plaza location, and now that family moved further south we go to the Metcalf location. No carts going around since COVID which is fine as long as I can still order bbq pork bun!
Most dim sum restaurants bring around steam cards with fresh hot food, this food came out in trays if they had been sitting in for God knows how long. All of the dim sum pieces were smaller than you will get it your typical Chinese dim sum restaurant. The waiters and staff were stressed and not friendly. It's a shame because I ate at the original bo. Ling in the early 2000s and the the whole restaurant was great. I would not recommend eating at this restaurant.
