About Blacksburg No. 1
Blacksburg No. 1, located at 125 N Main St #400 in Blacksburg, VA 24060, is a Chinese restaurant that aims to offer authentic Chinese flavors to the local community. Based on recent and past customer reviews, this introduction provides a detailed overview of the restaurant's environment, services, features, and any mentioned promotional information.
A recent review highlights a special ongoing event at Blacksburg No. 1: a free ice cream promotion. According to the customer, if your total order cost exceeds $20, you are eligible to receive a free waffle ice cream. The reviewer, who mentioned coming from Hong Kong, found the bubble waffle to be very similar to what they enjoyed in their youth, suggesting an authentic touch to this dessert offering. This current promotion is a notable feature that adds value to the dining experience.
The same reviewer also had high praise for the food, describing it as "SOOO awesome." Their personal favorites include the pork belly and the spicy dumpling soup, indicating that these dishes are particularly noteworthy and flavorful. The owner is also mentioned as being "very nice," contributing to a positive and welcoming atmosphere at the restaurant.
Another customer recommended Blacksburg No. 1 for those seeking to try authentic Chinese food. They found the prices to be reasonable and the portions to be generous, assuring that diners will "definitely get full." This suggests that the restaurant offers good value for money, providing substantial meals without being overly expensive.
Looking back at earlier reviews, there have been some fluctuations in customer perception. An update from December 2019 noted an increase in the rating to four stars, citing a friendly and attentive new cashier. This reviewer tried the spicy pot, describing it as having a large portion and a reasonable price. However, they were unsure if other dishes had maintained their previous quality.
Prior to that, in May 2019, a review indicated a reduction in the rating to three stars due to a perceived decrease in the quality of the noodle soup. The reviewer noted that previous spicy soups, which were full of flavor, had been replaced by clear broths with added chili sauce. Additionally, the luncheon meat slices were reported to be much thinner, and the complimentary oranges that were previously offered were no longer available. This update also mentioned an average price increase of $2.
Further back, in September 2018, another update led to a reduction in the rating to four stars, with the reviewer citing an indifferent server at the front desk who lacked enthusiasm and provided no greeting or interaction beyond taking the order. This suggests that service quality at the front desk might have been inconsistent at times.
An earlier review from when the restaurant was newly opened focused on the original beef noodle soup. The reviewer found the noodles to be quite tasty and full of flavor, and the beef portion was described as huge, exceeding expectations for the inexpensive price (around $8 at the time). Based on this initial experience, the reviewer gave the restaurant five stars and recommended it to friends.
In contrast, another customer found the regular beef rice noodle to be just "okay," noting that it was very mild and not spicy. This indicates that some dishes might cater to a milder palate, while others, like the spicy dumpling soup and spicy pot, offer more heat.
Lastly, a review of the roasted beef fried noodles described them as tasty but "a little too salty," advising diners to stay hydrated. This suggests that while the flavor profile might be appealing, the seasoning level could be intense for some.
Based on this compilation of reviews, Blacksburg No. 1 appears to be a Chinese restaurant that offers authentic Chinese cuisine with generous portions at reasonable prices. A current highlight is a special promotion offering free waffle ice cream for orders over $20. The owner is consistently described as very nice, contributing to a positive atmosphere.
However, the restaurant has also experienced fluctuations in customer perception over time, particularly regarding the quality of certain dishes like the noodle soup and the consistency of service, especially at the front desk. While some dishes, such as the pork belly and spicy dumpling soup, receive high praise, others, like the regular beef rice noodle and roasted beef fried noodles (due to saltiness), have received more mixed feedback.
The environment of Blacksburg No. 1 is not extensively described in the reviews, but the mention of a cashier and front desk suggests a typical casual restaurant setting where customers likely order at a counter. The recent free ice cream event with a bubble waffle indicates a willingness to offer unique and potentially authentic desserts.
The services include both dine-in and takeout, as implied by the counter service and the nature of the dishes reviewed (soups, noodles, fried dishes are all suitable for both). The fast service noted in some reviews, particularly the initial one praising the beef noodle soup, suggests efficiency in the kitchen.
The current "SPECIAL FREE ICE CREAM EVENT ONGOING!!" is the only explicit promotional information available. Local users interested in this offer should confirm its ongoing status and any specific terms or conditions by contacting the restaurant directly at (540) 739-3015 or +1 540-739-3015.
In conclusion, Blacksburg No. 1 offers a range of Chinese dishes, with some standouts like the pork belly and spicy dumpling soup. The portions are generally generous, and the prices are considered reasonable. The owner is known for being very nice, enhancing the customer experience. Currently, there is a special promotion for free waffle ice cream with orders over $20. However, potential customers should be aware of past feedback indicating some inconsistencies in food quality and service over time. It might be beneficial to inquire about the current preparation of specific dishes of interest based on the varied reviews. Overall, for those seeking authentic Chinese food in Blacksburg with generous portions and a friendly owner, Blacksburg No. 1 is worth considering, especially with the ongoing ice cream promotion.

[SPECIAL FREE ICE CREAM EVENT ONGOING!!] The owner is very nice! The food is SOOO awesome. I personally love their pork belly the most, and their spicy dumpling soup is also fantastic. Recently, they have a special event! From what I remember, if your total cost is above $20, you can get a free waffle ice cream. I came from Hong Kong, and I can tell you the bubble waffle is very similar to what I ate when I was young. If you want to try some authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go! It is not too expensive, and the portions are generous—you will definitely get full.
2019-12-11 Update: Rating increased to four stars. The new cashier was friendly and attentive. Tried their spicy pot. Large portion and reasonable price. Unknown if other dishes remained the same as before. 2019-05-13 Update: Rating reduced to three stars. The noodle soup quality has decreased appreciably: Previous spicy soups full of flavors have been changed to clear broths mixed with spoonful chili sauce. Luncheon meat slices become much thinner than before. Free oranges are gone. Price increased by $2 averagely. 2018-09-20 Updated: rating reduced to four-star: the server at the front desk taking orders was indifferent. No greeting, no words and I could not feel any passion from her about their business. A newly opened Chinese noodle restaurant. Had the original beef noodle soup there. The noodle is quite tasty and full of flavor. Beef size and portion are huge. The portion size definitely exceeds the expectation of the inexpensive price (~$8). Overall, this place deserves five stars and I will surely recommend it to my friends. The regular beef rice noodle was okay. Very mild, not spicy. Roasted beef fried noodles are tasty as well but a little too salty. Stay hydrated.
First time coming here and had high hopes with some other reviews. However, The food had absolutely zero flavor. To the point that my husband who will eat anything wasn’t even impressed. Had to doctor it up at home with seasoning and sauces. We both had fried rice with various meats and none of it was satisfying. The spring rolls were also very underwhelming. Strange puréed texture inside and again no flavor.
This restaurant has quickly become one of my favorite places in downtown Blacksburg. The food is flavorful, filling and well priced. I highly recommend ðŸ‘
Probably the most underrated Chinese restaraunt in Blacksburg. It seems like a small, tucked away business, but their noodles are amazing. The fried noodles are a little oily, but the soup noodles (especially ramen and udon) are amazing. In college, this is what I would treat myself to on my birthday (I lived out of state so I spent my birthdays alone 😢) since it was tasty, yet affordable. I usually got soup udon with fatty lamb and whatever toppings I felt like.
