About Big Wong

Discover the authentic taste of Cantonese cuisine at Big Wong, a Chinese Restaurant nestled in the heart of New York City's vibrant Chinatown. This establishment has garnered positive reviews from local diners who appreciate its classic dishes, reasonable prices, and friendly service.

Big Wong is particularly celebrated for its Cantonese specialties. The roast duck is frequently mentioned as a highlight, boasting beautifully roasted crispy skin and juicy, tender meat with a rich and savory flavor. It is recommended to enjoy it hot to fully appreciate its qualities, especially when paired with the accompanying plum sauce.

Another standout dish is the Cantonese-style beef chow fun (湿炒牛河). This flavorful creation features stir-fried flat rice noodles, tender marinated beef slices, bean sprouts, onions, and green onions, all expertly tossed in a delicious soy-based sauce. The noodles often have a desirable slight char, adding a pleasant crispness to the dish.

For those seeking comforting and traditional options, the beef with bitter melon on rice is a popular choice, offering a pleasant contrast between the bitterness of the melon and the savory beef. While opinions on specific dishes can vary, one reviewer noted that the hot & sour soup had a strong vinegar flavor.

Beyond the food, customers consistently praise the helpful and friendly service provided by the employees, even amidst the restaurant's bustling environment. Big Wong is also recognized for its reasonable prices, making it an accessible option for those seeking authentic Cantonese flavors without breaking the bank. It's worth noting that paying in cash may offer a slight discount.

While one review mentions that the restaurant decor might be considered "ugly," the focus remains firmly on the quality and affordability of the food. Dishes like the crispy roasted pork, described as amazing with juicy and soft meat and crunchy skin, and the highly praised green beans with detectable garlic, further underscore the restaurant's culinary strengths.

In summary, if you're a local in Singapore with a craving for authentic Cantonese cuisine and find yourself in New York City, particularly in the Chinatown area, Big Wong offers a satisfying dining experience with its classic dishes, friendly service, and budget-friendly prices. It's a place where the focus is on delivering flavorful and traditional Cantonese food.

Big Wong, located in Chinatown, is a fantastic spot for classic Cantonese dishes at reasonable prices. We ordered the roast duck, beef with bitter melon on rice, Cantonese-style beef chow fun (湿炒牛河), and hot & sour soup. The roast duck was a highlight ,beautifully roasted with crispy skin and juicy, tender meat. The flavor of the duck was rich and savory, with just the right amount of seasoning. However, a word of advice: it’s best enjoyed hot because once it cools down, the fat tends to solidify, making it a bit greasy. Served alongside plum sauce, the roast duck was a delight, but you’ll want to dig in while it’s fresh. The Cantonese-style beef chow fun (湿炒牛河) was another standout. It consisted of stir-fried flat rice noodles, marinated beef slices, bean sprouts, onions, and green onions, all tossed in a delicious soy-based sauce. The noodles had a slight char, giving them a perfect crispness that paired well with the tender beef and savory sauce. The beef with bitter melon on rice was a comforting classic, with the bitterness of the melon adding a nice contrast to the savory beef. The hot & sour soup, however, had a bit too much vinegar for my liking, which overpowered the other flavors. The employees were helpful and friendly, providing great service despite the bustling atmosphere. The prices are reasonable, and it’s a little cheaper if you pay in cash rather than with a card, which is a nice tip for budget-conscious diners. Big Wong is an excellent spot for authentic Cantonese food, especially if you’re craving roast duck or beef chow fun

The crispy roasted pork here is amazing. Juicy and soft with a crunchy skin. The green beans were the best I ever had. The garlic was detectable! The restaurant decor is nothing but ugly. The service is fine. Come for the food. The prices are amazing. The most expensive item was the green beans.

Went for a late lunch here because we wanted authentic Cantonese food. The restaurant was large and fairly empty when we were there. We ordered mixed vegetables, pan-fried noodles, and 2 roast meats over rice. The service was pretty poor given that it was past lunch rush hour. We had to ask for the soda that we ordered 3x! Meanwhile, our meal was already half finished. The flavor of the gravy on the pan-fried noodles were on point. They gave a lot of vegetables and a wide variety too! We thought the size of the roast meats over rice dish was kind of small. It was disappointing to see there were no vegetables included! The dish was okay. If we didn't order the vegetable noodles, we would have ordered a small side of vegetables to go with the rice. Overall, the prices were moderate to expensive for what it is as it's located on Mott Street. For cheaper food, it's best to go off Mott Street. Given the poor service and fairly pricey food, I will not return any time soon.

I had high hopes for Big Wong after seeing glowing reviews on Instagram, but unfortunately, my experience was far from great. The congee lacked the signature thickness and depth of flavor I was expecting—it was bland and watery. Worse, the chicken served was red and clearly undercooked, making it completely inedible. It’s disappointing to say, but this wasn’t Big Wong—it was “Big Wrong.” Safe to say I won’t be returning.

Solid Cantonese restaurant. Good option if you are in Chinatown. The BBQ meats aren't the greatest or anything but they are perfectly fine. We had Roast Duck and BBQ Pork with rice and had no issues. The Garlic Green Beans were good. They had the right amount of crunchiness and good flavor.
