About Ben's

Welcome to Ben's, a Chinese restaurant situated at 398 3rd Street in Oakland, California. As a local Chinese eatery, Ben's appears to prioritize the freshness of its ingredients and the quality of its cooked-to-order dishes, particularly for takeout customers. Based on the available reviews, Ben's offers a straightforward approach to Chinese cuisine, with a focus on ensuring the food is prepared fresh rather than sitting under heating lamps.

Regarding the environment of Ben's, customer feedback suggests that the ambiance is not a primary focus. Located in what one reviewer describes as a "warehouse neighborhood," the surroundings may not be conducive to a traditional dine-in experience. This is further emphasized by the recommendation to consider the food as a "takeout" option. Therefore, local users seeking a restaurant with a strong emphasis on atmosphere for an on-site meal might find Ben's less appealing. However, for those prioritizing the quality and freshness of the food for consumption elsewhere, the location might be less of a concern.

In terms of services, Ben's primarily seems geared towards takeout orders. One reviewer specifically mentioned ordering "takeout," and another, who attempted to dine in but found the restaurant closed, also ended up taking their order to go. The positive comments about the staff being "very friendly" and providing "service with a smile" indicate a positive customer interaction experience when placing and picking up orders. The efficiency of the service is also highlighted, with the food being prepared fresh upon order.

A prominent feature of Ben's, based on customer reviews, is the emphasis on freshly cooked food. One reviewer explicitly stated, "They fix your order when you place it, food is fresh, not sitting under heating lights." This commitment to preparing meals to order suggests a focus on quality and potentially better taste compared to food that has been pre-cooked and kept warm. This could be a significant advantage for customers who value freshly made meals.

The chicken fried rice appears to be a popular and frequently mentioned dish at Ben's. One reviewer described it as "really good food, very fresh," noting that the "chicken was fresh and juicy, not overcooked and the taste was spot on." They also appreciated the accompanying "mildly hot" hot sauce. This positive feedback suggests that the chicken fried rice is a standout item on the menu and a likely reason for some customers to visit Ben's.

However, another reviewer who traveled a significant distance to try the chicken fried rice had a more mixed experience. While acknowledging that it "tasted okay," they had anticipated better. They noted that the dish was "full of Chicken breast, a bit dry, very little vegetables and barely any egg." This highlights the subjective nature of taste and the potential for inconsistencies in the preparation or ingredients of a dish. It also suggests that while some customers find the chicken fried rice exceptional, others might find it average.

Another crucial piece of information from the reviews concerns the pricing and payment methods at Ben's. One customer was "surprised by the prices on the website," finding the in-person prices to be "much cheaper by at least $6.00." They speculated that this discrepancy might be due to the rising cost of living. However, they also pointed out the importance of updating the menu and prices to avoid "blind siding" new customers. Additionally, this reviewer mentioned that Ben's "only accept cash payments." This is a significant detail for potential customers to be aware of before placing an order or visiting the restaurant.

Regarding promotional information, there are no specific details provided in the reviews. Local users interested in any potential specials or discounts offered by Ben's would need to contact the restaurant directly at (510) 763-8336 or mobile at +1 510-763-8336. Inquiring about daily specials, lunch deals, or any other promotions might help in making a decision.

In conclusion, Ben's Chinese Restaurant in Oakland, located at 398 3rd St, seems to be a takeout-focused establishment that prioritizes the freshness of its food, particularly its chicken fried rice. While some customers have lauded the dish for its fresh and juicy chicken and spot-on taste, others have found it to be just "okay" with potential inconsistencies in ingredients. The ambiance is noted to be less appealing due to its warehouse neighborhood location. It is also crucial for potential customers to be aware that Ben's reportedly operates on a cash-only basis and that there might be discrepancies between online and in-person menu prices. For local users seeking freshly prepared Chinese takeout in Oakland, Ben's might be worth considering, especially if the chicken fried rice is of interest. However, it's advisable to call ahead to confirm current prices and payment methods.

Really good food, very fresh. I ordered the chicken fried rice as takeout, chicken was fresh and juicy, not overcooked and the taste was spot on. Goes well with the included hot sauce which is mildly hot. Ambience is not great as it is a warehouse neighborhood, recommend food as takeout.

I was finally able to try this restaurant today, I traveled from Pittsburg via BART just to try it. I was at Jack London Square last week, I attempted to try it, but they had already closed. First, I must say that the staff is very friendly, provide service with a smile, efficient. They fix your order when you place it, food is fresh, not sitting under heating lights. I got the Chicken Fried Rice that everyone ranted and raved about in the reviews. It was $14.00 for a medium sized take out container. It tasted okay, but I was anticipating better. I ate some there, took the rest home. It was full of Chicken breast, a bit dry, very little vegetables and barely any egg. I was also surprised by the prices on the website, the items are much cheaper by at least $6.00. I realize the cost of living has gone up, and they have to charge more. It would be helpful if they update your menu/prices so new customers won't be blind sided. Especially, since they only accept cash payments. This was not my favorite so, I won't be going back, do not recommend.

Our lunch here was fantastic. The food was superb. David, the guy who greeted us and waited on us is truly a friendly person, and his dad, Ben is cooking in this wonderful hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We'll be back! We had Ben's fried rice, and Ben's Chow Mein. Both were delicious, and the topper is the chili sauce they make in-house. Yum!

Loved this place! I was visiting from Korea and I needed some Asian food with rice. The place is small and simple but Ben and the other perosn working there were very friendly. They offered hot tea, and more rice! Food was good and the prices were reasonable. I highly recommend!

David and his parents are the best. Get the Kung Pao Chicken, or the Singaporean Rice Noodles. Get extra of that hella good sauce they make, it’s addictive. On Wednesdays their fried chicken special is crazy good but you need to get there early because it’s a long line
