About August Moon
Welcome to August Moon, a Chinese Restaurant located at 405 NW 23rd Ave in Portland, Oregon. As a long-standing establishment in the category of Chinese Restaurants, August Moon offers a menu featuring a variety of traditional American Chinese dishes. Based on recent customer reviews, the dining experience at August Moon appears to be somewhat inconsistent, with differing opinions on food quality, service, and atmosphere.
One recent customer who visited for a quick dinner before a meeting had a notably negative experience. They ordered the kung pao chicken and described it as "terrible," citing issues with the quality of the rice, which they found to be old, and the chicken, which was rubbery. Despite their hunger, they ate the dish but stated they would not return. This reviewer also expressed surprise at the restaurant's longevity and found the wine to be subpar. This feedback highlights significant concerns regarding the freshness and quality of at least one of the dishes and the beverage selection.
In contrast, another reviewer had a more positive experience with the food, stating that it was "fresh and cooked to order." They mentioned that the wait time was acceptable given the freshness of the food upon arrival, which was hot. This suggests that August Moon has the capacity to prepare fresh, made-to-order meals. This reviewer also noted the availability of "lots of traditional American Chinese dishes" on the menu, indicating a focus on familiar and classic Chinese-American cuisine.
However, this second reviewer also mentioned that the dishes were "not very interesting" for their palate, although their 80+ year old parents enjoyed the food. This implies that August Moon's menu might cater more to those with a preference for traditional, perhaps less adventurous, Americanized Chinese flavors. The large portions were also noted as a positive aspect of the dining experience.
Regarding the service and atmosphere, the second reviewer described them as "lacking." They elaborated by saying that if a customer prefers to sit and not have much interaction with the staff, then August Moon "works." They noted that during their visit, only three tables were occupied, and they were able to linger and talk for a long time without feeling pressured to leave. This suggests that while the service might not be attentive or proactive, it could be suitable for those seeking a quiet and unhurried dining environment where they can have extended conversations without interruption.
The discrepancy in these two recent reviews paints a somewhat ambiguous picture of August Moon. While one customer experienced significant issues with food quality and beverage selection, the other found the food fresh and the portions large, albeit not particularly exciting in terms of flavor. The service and atmosphere also received contrasting descriptions, with one finding them lacking and the other appreciating the lack of attentiveness for a relaxed dining experience.
The address, 405 NW 23rd Ave in Portland, places August Moon in a potentially busy and accessible area of the city. You can contact them by phone at (503) 248-9040 or via mobile at +1 503-248-9040 for inquiries or to place orders. The reviews do not explicitly mention takeout or delivery services, so it would be advisable to contact the restaurant directly to confirm the availability of these options, in addition to dine-in service.
Given the mixed feedback, potential customers might want to consider their priorities when choosing a Chinese restaurant. If fresh, cooked-to-order food and large portions of traditional American Chinese dishes are appealing, and a quiet, unhurried dining environment with minimal service interaction is acceptable, then August Moon might be worth a try. However, those seeking more innovative or flavorful cuisine, attentive service, and a vibrant atmosphere might want to consider other options. The negative review regarding the kung pao chicken and old rice serves as a caution about potential inconsistencies in food quality.
It is also worth noting that the reviews do not provide any information about potential promotional offers or recent changes at the restaurant that might explain the contrasting experiences. Without further information, it is difficult to ascertain whether the negative experience was an isolated incident or indicative of a broader issue. Similarly, the appreciation for the unhurried atmosphere might be a result of the restaurant being less busy during certain times.
In conclusion, August Moon presents itself as a Chinese Restaurant in Portland, OR, offering a menu of traditional American Chinese dishes with large portions. Customer experiences have been varied, with some praising the freshness of the food while others have reported significant quality issues. The service and atmosphere appear to be low-key, which might be a positive for some seeking a relaxed and private dining experience but a negative for those expecting more attentive service. Potential local users should weigh these mixed reviews and consider their own preferences when deciding whether to dine at August Moon. It might be prudent to inquire about the freshness of specific dishes when ordering, based on the recent negative feedback.

I came here for a quick dinner before a meeting. I I ordered kung pao chicken. It was terrible. The rice was old, the chicken was rubbery. I ate it cause I was hungry. Never again. I can’t imagine how they have stayed in business. The wine wasn’t even very good.
The food was fresh and cooked to order. I never mind waiting when the food arrives hot. There are lots of traditional American Chinese dishes from which to choose. For our pallets it wasn't very interesting. My 80+ year old parents loved it. The service and atmosphere were lacking but if you want to just sit and not have anyone come near your table, it works. We sat there for a long time and there were 3 tables used in total. So it is a good place to linger and talk without feeling pressure to leave. Also the portions are large.
This restaurant is so underrated. The egg drop soup is the best I’ve tried in Portland. It’s the classic, bright yellow egg drop soup and adding the crispy wontons makes it perfect. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and perfect for these cold winter evenings. Another winner menu item would be their egg foo young. It is truly unbeatable. I also got the barbecue spare ribs and they were very tender, saucy and delicious. This place reminds me a lot of my favorite Chinese restaurants on the East Coast. Definitely my new go-to spot
Myself & my family absolutely love this place! It has the best egg drop soup in not only Portland, but so far all of Oregon!! I’ve been a regular customer here for about five years and the quality of food has maintained consistently delicious. My top recommended Chinese food in Portland 👌🏼
We ordered a lot of food and none of it was good. We thought with the prices they had, it would have been great. Instead, it was the worst Chinese food we ever had.
