About AAFES Food Court

Located at 2503 Funston Rd bldg 2420 in San Antonio, Texas, within the AAFES complex, the AAFES Food Court provides a convenient dining experience for locals and visitors alike. While categorized as offering Chinese cuisine due to the presence of Ming, the food court actually encompasses a diverse array of food vendors.

According to customer reviews, the AAFES Food Court offers a variety of options including QDOBA MEXICAN FOOD, SLIM CHICKENS, CHARLEYS PHILLY STEAKS, SUBWAY, SARKU JAPAN, BOBA + ACAI BUBBLE TEAM & SMOOTHI CAFE, and Starbucks. This selection suggests a range of cuisines from Mexican-inspired to American fast food, Japanese, and beverage choices like bubble tea and smoothies.

The environment of the food court is described as having plenty of seating and a great atmosphere, enhanced by its location within the AAFES STORES and vendor area, making it a potentially convenient stop for shoppers. It is also mentioned that non-military personnel are welcome to dine at the food court.

However, some customer reviews offer critical perspectives on the food quality. Specifically, the Chinese food from Ming is described as "embarrassing" and "flavorless," with concerns about it being reheated and lacking proper seasoning. Similarly, Sarku Japan's offerings, such as the fried dumplings and chicken teriyaki bento, are criticized for their texture and excessive saltiness. Charlie's Philly Steaks is noted for including mushrooms, which may not align with traditional East Coast cheesesteak expectations, and the overall taste is deemed unsatisfactory by one reviewer. Qdoba is acknowledged for its food quality, but its claim to be authentic Mexican food is disputed.

Overall, the AAFES Food Court presents a variety of dining options in a convenient location with ample seating and a welcoming atmosphere for both military and non-military individuals. However, online reviews suggest that the quality of food may vary significantly between vendors, with some customers expressing disappointment with the Chinese and Japanese offerings in particular.

Probably one of the worst Base food courts in the nation, which is a shame since Fort Sam is overall so iconic. Let’s start with Ming. The Chinese food is embarrassing, flavorless and most likely reheated from a frozen bag. The fried rice is dull and the egg rolls don’t have any real seasoning. Panda Express would be a Michelin Star restaurant if it were compared to this. Sarku Japan is just as bad with fried dumplings that are chewy in such a bad way. The chicken teriyaki bento is over sauces and way too salty. It’s connected to Ming so it’s easy to assume they are buying their products from the same Sam’s Club frozen section. Then there’s Charlie’s Philly Steaks which I would avoid if you’re from the east coast. They even have mushrooms in their cheesesteaks and other protein options. This might be a good thing if it tasted amazing, sadly it does not. Qdoba is an interesting choice but let’s be honest here it is not Mexican food and it’s annoying that it claims to be. I can’t really say anything bad about the food itself it’s just not Mexican. More like what an American from the western states would try to claim as Mexican. There are signs throughout the food court encouraging non military to eat there in case they thought they couldn’t but the reality is the food is subpar and not worth the disappointment. Here’s a radical idea, put decent quality food in the court and you will see an improvement in patronage. It’s terrible our service members are forced to have these horrible options thrust upon them. Do better AAFES.

We finally got a chance to eat at Sarku Japan at AAFES Food Court in Fort Sam, as you can see from the pictures the food is well presented and they served a lot. I thought that we would have food leftover, but it tasted so good we could help but finish it.

It's a typical military food court, all places are fast, not the healthiest, and times vary greatly daily, check before you go.

I had beef and broccoli Asian food. It was fantastic. Nice and fresh. The seating area is huge, but you can have a quiet conversation with your table guests.
