About 88 BaoBao

Welcome to 88 BaoBao, a Chinese restaurant located at 3330 Village Dr in Castro Valley, California. As a valued member of the Chinese Restaurant platform category, 88 BaoBao has garnered positive feedback from local users, particularly for its delectable dumplings and attentive service. If you're in the Castro Valley area and have a craving for expertly crafted dumplings and other flavorful Chinese dishes, 88 BaoBao appears to be a promising destination that prioritizes both the quality of its food and the satisfaction of its customers.

Based on customer reviews, the environment of 88 BaoBao is described as "kind of small," which often suggests a more intimate and perhaps bustling atmosphere, especially if the focus is on freshly prepared food. A notable aspect of the environment is that "you can see the chefs making food," indicating an open kitchen concept. This transparency can enhance the dining experience by allowing customers to witness the preparation process, reinforcing the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. While the restaurant might be smaller in size, the visibility of the kitchen can add an element of authenticity and engagement to the dining experience, assuring patrons of the care and attention put into their meals. Local Chinese restaurants with open kitchens often aim to provide a sense of connection between the food and the diner.

The service at 88 BaoBao is consistently praised by reviewers. The staff is described as "sharp and good," implying efficiency and competence. More specifically, they "keep checking for feedback and water," demonstrating attentiveness to customer needs and a proactive approach to ensuring a comfortable dining experience. One reviewer explicitly stated "Excellent service," reinforcing the positive impression of the staff's dedication to customer satisfaction. This level of attentiveness, from monitoring drink levels to seeking feedback, suggests a commitment to providing a high-quality dining experience that goes beyond just serving food. Such proactive service can significantly enhance the overall enjoyment of the meal and encourage repeat visits from local customers.

The features of 88 BaoBao prominently include its "Yum dumplings 😍," with specific mentions of "Shrimp chicken or any for that matter" being "amazing." This highlights the dumplings as a specialty of the restaurant, with a variety of fillings that have clearly impressed customers. The quality of the dumplings is further emphasized by another reviewer who stated, "The dumplings are excellent." Beyond dumplings, another standout feature is the "popcorn chicken," which is described as "served fresh and in a huge serving." This generous portion size suggests good value, and the emphasis on freshness indicates a commitment to quality ingredients and preparation. The open kitchen, allowing customers to see the food being made, is another key feature that speaks to the restaurant's transparency and focus on freshness. However, one minor point mentioned as a "complaint" is that "they don’t give you hot and sour sauce" automatically and that "You have to ask for it." This suggests that while the sauce is available, customers should be aware they need to request it specifically.

Considering these points, 88 BaoBao in Castro Valley distinguishes itself as a Chinese restaurant that excels in the quality and taste of its food, particularly its diverse range of dumplings. The attentive and sharp service further enhances the dining experience, making customers feel well-cared for. The fresh and generously portioned popcorn chicken adds another layer of appeal, offering a satisfying and value-driven option. The visible kitchen provides a sense of transparency and reinforces the freshness of the food. While the restaurant might be on the smaller side, the overall positive feedback suggests that the quality of the food and service more than compensate for any perceived lack of space. Local users looking for delicious dumplings and attentive service in Castro Valley should definitely consider 88 BaoBao.

The food is excellent. The restaurant is kind of small but you can see the chefs making food. The dumplings are excellent. The popcorn chicken is served fresh and in a huge serving. My only complaint is that they don’t give you hot and sour sauce. You have to ask for it.

Recently had the opportunity to try out this place and had a pretty great dining experience. The first thing to note was that the service was attentive and front of the house very quick to provide service. I also really enjoyed that the prep area has somewhat of an open view; it made eating here feel active and provided a nice atmosphere. I tried a few dishes- the first of which surprised me and that was the beef rolls. They are essentially a green onion pancake with beef slices rolled up inside. Not only were they flavorful but also cooked perfectly, with a nice crunch to the bread but also a softness inside. The beef noodle soup was equally good, but maybe missing that final "oompf" of savory flavor that I hoped for. We tried some steamed goods, including the soup dumplings, shumai, and pan fried buns. The soup dumplings were great as expected, the shumai a bit on the small side I really enjoy the super large ones. The pan fried buns impressed me a lot with their presentation but I thought that they may not have been as flavorful as I anticipated, though I did like the amount of broth inside that impressed me. Overall, I really liked the restaurant's atmosphere and service, and thought some dishes lacked that final bit of savory bite that I hoped for. If you prefer dishes light on flavor, you might really love what is available here. Another thing was that at $12-15 for most dishes, the bill adds up really quick. Definitely one of the most expensive dim sum-esque dining places I have been to in a while.

Finally found a place that can compete with Ding Tai Fung. The dumpling skin is thin and chewy. The meat inside isn't too salty/oily. Beef wrap is so far the best we've had in bay area. It's a little crispy outside and very chewy. The red bean bun was super good, the bun itself was very chewy which not a lot of places are able to make such good bun. Will be back again definitely.

Been going here since they opened. The service has been good and the food too. Overall a good place to get soup dumpling without that high price.
