About 28 Tigers
Welcome to 28 Tigers, a Chinese Restaurant located at 4105 SE 28th Ave in Portland, Oregon. This establishment offers a unique and refreshing approach to Chinese cuisine, setting itself apart from the typical expansive menus often found in Chinese restaurants. Based on recent customer feedback, 28 Tigers provides a special and memorable dining experience characterized by a casual atmosphere, a distinctive open kitchen, friendly employees, and notably delicious food.
One of the standout items that has garnered exceptional praise is the ginger chicken bao. According to one enthusiastic reviewer, both they and their date were "absolutely blown away" by how fantastic it was. This suggests that the ginger chicken bao is a signature dish at 28 Tigers and a must-try for anyone visiting the restaurant. The high praise indicates a perfect balance of flavors and textures that leaves a lasting positive impression.
The overall vibe of 28 Tigers is described as "special," contributing significantly to the positive dining experience. The reviewer specifically appreciated the casual feel of the restaurant, creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for diners. The open kitchen is another notable feature, allowing patrons to witness the culinary process firsthand, adding an element of transparency and perhaps even entertainment to the meal. While the review mentions the "cluttered glory" of the open kitchen, this is presented in an endearing way, suggesting an authentic and bustling culinary space rather than a disorganized one.
The friendliness of the employees is another key aspect of the 28 Tigers experience that customers have appreciated. Welcoming and approachable staff can greatly enhance the overall enjoyment of a meal, making diners feel more comfortable and valued. This positive feedback about the service complements the praise for the food and atmosphere.
A significant feature of 28 Tigers is its concise menu. This is intentionally different from the often extensive offerings of typical Chinese restaurants, suggesting a focus on quality over quantity and a curated selection of well-executed dishes. One reviewer expressed excitement about returning to try "hopefully everything else from the menu," indicating a high level of trust in the restaurant's ability to deliver delicious food across its entire selection.
However, it is important to provide a balanced perspective based on all available feedback. One reviewer noted that while they found the dishes to be good overall, everything was "a bit too salty" for their personal taste. They also mentioned that it would have been great to have something milder on the menu to balance out the saltiness. This feedback is valuable for potential customers who are sensitive to salt levels and suggests that while the flavors are generally appealing, the seasoning might be intense for some palates. The reviewer's suggestion for milder options also points to a potential area for menu expansion or customization.
The name "28 Tigers" itself is intriguing and contributes to the unique identity of the restaurant. While the reviews do not provide any specific context or meaning behind the name, it adds to the memorable and distinctive character of the establishment.

I'd been patiently waiting for my date here, and we were both absolutely blown away by how fantastic the ginger chicken bao was! The vibe of 28 Tigers is special, I love the casual feel, the open kitchen with all it's cluttered glory, the friendly employees, and, wow, the food! I'll be coming back to try hopefully everything else from the menu, as it's a concise menu, not what you might be used to seeing at a typical Chinese restaurant.
A nice little joint with good dishes, but everything was a bit too salty for my taste. It would’ve been great to have something milder to balance things out.
Perfect dumplings, perfect noodles (we had dan dan noodle as well 🤤), perfect chicken and veggies on point ! 💜 kind and attentive staffs. will visit again!
Absolutely amazing food. Have ate quite a bit of Asian food from around the country and they are by far my new favorite. My kids even ate it they usually won't. Evening was fresh and tasted even better than I would have ever imagined. Those dudes can cook. We send our thanks back home in Texas. Definitely will be back next time we are around Portland. 6 ⭐
Oh, my. This place is OUTSTANDING. Stumbled upon it on Google Maps and just by food pictures knew we had to come. Pork Dan Dan noodles, chicken baos, and dumplings - thought for sure the two of us would be taking leftovers home but we definitely devoured it all. Staff was super nice and seemed to enjoy working there. Highly recommend!
