About #1 China Buffet
#1 China Buffet, located at 1092 N High St, Hillsboro, OH 45133, USA, operates within the "Chinese Restaurant" platform category, primarily serving the local community as a buffet-style establishment. The restaurant can be contacted by phone at (937) 393-2338 or +1 937-393-2338. This introduction aims to provide a detailed and objective overview of #1 China Buffet, drawing insights from recent customer reviews, which highlight significant changes in its quality and service over time.
The environment of #1 China Buffet, as depicted in recent customer feedback, suggests a decline in maintenance and presentation. While the concept of a Chinese buffet typically implies a spacious dining area with various food stations, the current state seems to fall short of expectations. One reviewer noted that the "front area upon walking in is always a mess always has boxes piled up." This indicates a lack of attention to cleanliness and organization in the immediate entrance, which can significantly impact a customer's first impression. The review also mentions that the "pictures you see here are from the five star review I wrote six years ago. Their line doesn't look nearly this good now." This implies that the visual appeal and freshness of the buffet line itself have deteriorated, suggesting a less inviting and less appealing display of food. The general environment is thus portrayed as having gone "down hill," which is a considerable concern for a restaurant, particularly one operating as a buffet where visual appeal and cleanliness of the food display are crucial.
Service at #1 China Buffet, based on recent reviews, has also experienced a notable decline. Historically, the staff was remembered as "always friendly and kind," with one past experience even noting that a seniors' discount was given without asking. However, this has changed significantly. Current feedback describes the staff as "rude," and a direct inquiry about a seniors' discount was met with "No, everybody pay same." This indicates a shift in customer service approach, moving away from a friendly and accommodating demeanor to one that is perceived as unhelpful or even argumentative. Furthermore, there are consistent issues with order accuracy for takeout. Customers report that "Every time I order from here stuff is missing or they mess up the order." Attempts to rectify these issues, by either calling back or returning to the restaurant, were met with resistance, as the staff would "want to argue about how I didn't order this I ordered that ect." Even showing a written order on a notepad did not prevent errors. This suggests significant problems with order-taking, communication, and a lack of willingness to resolve customer complaints, leading to frustration and a sense of being inconvenienced. The service model seems to be suffering from a breakdown in basic customer care and order fulfillment, which is critical for any restaurant, especially one that offers takeout.
The features of #1 China Buffet primarily revolve around its all-you-can-eat buffet offerings, which aim to provide a wide variety of Chinese and sometimes other Asian dishes. However, recent customer reviews indicate a severe decline in the quality and variety of the food. Key issues highlighted include:
- Lack of Variety: A significant complaint is the absence of "multiple varieties of shrimp," with "none at all to be found." This is a standard offering at most Chinese buffets, and its omission suggests a reduction in the diversity of the buffet line.
- Poor Quality of Staple Dishes: General Tso's chicken, a popular dish, was described as "terrible," with a "bland and as thin as water" sauce, "bland" chicken, and an "agreeable texture and thicker breading than it should have." This points to fundamental issues in recipe execution and ingredient quality.
- Flavor and Texture Issues: Bacon-wrapped crab leg segments were "practically tasteless," and even "fried wings" had "very little taste" with "very thick and brittle" breading and "just a little meat." Teriyaki chicken was merely "just okay." This consistent lack of flavor and poor texture across multiple items indicates a systemic problem with the food quality.
- Reduced Dessert Options: The absence of previously available items like "chocolate mocha cake" suggests a further reduction in variety and quality within the dessert section.
- Only Positive Item: The only positive feedback regarding food quality was that the "crab rangoons were good," which is a small silver lining amidst widespread criticism.
Regarding promotional information, the reviews indirectly touch upon pricing and value. The past practice of offering a seniors' discount without prompting, and the current policy of "No, everybody pay same," suggests a change in their pricing strategy, potentially aiming for uniformity over special concessions. While the review from six years ago mentioned a "glowing review about how great it was," and presumably good value then, the recent negative feedback on food quality and service suggests that even if prices remain reasonable, the perceived value has drastically decreased due to the poor quality of the offerings. For a buffet, the implicit promotion is the "all-you-can-eat" aspect combined with variety and quality. When quality and variety decline, the value proposition is significantly diminished. There is no explicit mention of ongoing promotions like loyalty programs, specific daily deals, or online coupons in the provided information. Potential customers would need to contact the restaurant directly to inquire about current pricing or any existing promotions. However, the overwhelmingly negative recent customer experiences, particularly concerning food quality and service, suggest that any promotional efforts would need to be significantly backed by improvements in core operations to attract and retain customers effectively. The sentiment "really tempted to not order from here anymore" despite it being the "only chinese restaurant in our small town" underscores the depth of customer dissatisfaction.

I visited this place six years ago and gave them a five star rating and wrote a glowing review about how great it was, but since then the quality has dramatically decreased. Almost all Chinese buffets over multiple varieties of shrimp, but there were none at all to be found yesterday. At any other Chinese buffet I want General Tso's chicken over noodles, but it was terrible this time. The sauce was bland and as thin as water. The chicken was bland as well and had a very disagreeable texture and thicker breading than it should have. The bacon-wrapped crab leg segments were practically tasteless. How can you make bacon bland? I hate wasting food, but after a couple bites of the General Tso's chicken I set that plate aside and returned to the food lines. They had fried wings, and I thought they couldn't make anything fried bland so I took a few. I was wrong, the wings had very little taste. The breading on them was very thick and brittle with just a little meat underneath. Gone was the chocolate mocha cake they had six years ago. The Teriyaki chicken was just okay. The apple puffs were just okay with just a little apple filling in them. The only positive thing was that the crab rangoons were good. In the review I wrote six years ago I mentioned that they gave me a seniors' discount without me even asking, but this time when I asked about it the guy said, "No, everybody pay same." BTW, the pictures you see here are from the five star review I wrote six years ago. Their line doesn't look nearly this good now.
Loved this place as a kid staff was always friendly and kind but now staff is rude I order from here occasionally but really tempted to not order from here anymore the down fall is this is the only chinese restaurantin our small town. Every time I order from here stuff is missing or they mess up the order. I've went back to tell them my order is messed up or they forgot things and they want to argue about how I didn't order this I ordered that ect. I'm autistic and always write my order down before calling or have someone call. I had a friend go in and order one time my friend showed the lady my order on my note pad on my phone and the order was still messed up/missing things. This establishment has really went down hill and it saddens me cause this was my favorite place to eat growing up. Also the front area upon walking in is always a mess always has boxes piled up.
We used to enjoy the food from this restaurant. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, and used to get pieces of chicken. This time it was similar to hush puppies. There were round balls of dough with maybe a tiny piece of chicken the size of a pea in the middle. The pork in the pork fried rice was burnt. The meal was a huge disappointment. The service was good. The order was called in ready at the promised time.
Not a lot of food options. Most of its dry and bland. Was not greeted when we walked in. No refill and was there 45mins. We had 3 people and we sat at a bigger table and was told to move, because those are for bigger families. I could understand if they were busy but it was just us and another family.
They don't have a lunch special so throw that idea out the window if its before 12 in the afternoon. Its roughly about $18 a person with a drink included. They are supposed to being you drinks and keep them refilled for you but they are bad at the upkeep so you'll be needing to fill your own drinks too..not a big deal but it is not what they want. The food is fine for a buffet but overall some thing's are just better than others especially if you get it fresh. Shame because this is the only chinese place around Hillsboro.
