Panda Kitchen
Panda Kitchen is one of the only places that still serves cheap Chinese food in Oakland! Located right across the street from the Main Oakland Public Library and a few steps from Lake Merritt, they've been in business for more than 8+ years! I used to come here all the time when my daughter went to school nearby, we would come after school to have a quick affordable dinner, and we would share since the portion has always been huge! They used to display hot food in the front, and the lady would serve then and there. Now, when you place an order, it comes out fresh, so the food will be ready in 10 minutes. If you're not sure what to order, they display food items on their walls so you can pick them from there. They also display the total prices on the table so you know exactly how much you are paying!! 😂 The portion is big and sharable. Highly recommend it if you're in the area and looking for a hole in the wall spot!
Small dinning area. This place is probably primarily for carry out food. The (one) food combo can feed two average size Asians 5'7". The food is very tasty but you won't feel great afterwards because of the amount of salt or msg in the food. HOWEVER, the food is very delicious, like crack! I would come back again!
Peony Seafood Restaurant
I came for the dim sum lunch with a friend who had never had dim sum before. This place is very authentic and we both thought everything was delicious. My favorite items were the crispy shrimp balls, steamed pork buns, short ribs, and the steamed egg custard buns.
Large, spacious well-run restaurant. I sat toward the back and did tea service, staff were very attentive. We went on the earlier side Sunday AM (10:30am) so we did not have to wait. The beef baked bun in particular was my favorite - flaky, soft and nice balance of salty/sweet. Loved all the dishes we ordered, and will be adding this to my list of regular dim sum spots!
R' noodles
Apparently it used to be a restaurant, but it’s now a bakery. Breads are very mediocre. Cakes and buns are ok. The white milk bread loaf is not good. It’s soft but quite chewy in a bad way, even fresh.
Wonderful restaurant. Although they have a bakery portion, they still serve noodle dishes. As a noodle fiend, I love their river snail noodles. How to describe it? Don't let the name deter you. It's like a melody of different contrasting textures and flavors, from the sour bamboo to the condiments and hearty broth, and as a whole, bursting full of flavor. It's a perfect combo with their soy milk. Yum! The restaurant staff always are so friendly too.
Ming's Tasty
Many of my favorite dim sum spots have closed over the years, and thankfully, we found Ming's Tasty, and I will keep coming back. The service is excellent! The food is delicious! Be sure to have the chicken feet with Peking sauce. Thank you Ming's for many delicious meals.
A classic authentic Chinese cafe with delicious quality dim sum. Service was friendly and fast. You know it’s good when all the Chinese folks eat here. It was a little loud and busy at lunch but soon was quiet and relaxed, even though all the tables were full. This will be my go-to spot in Oakland.
Shan Dong
We visited at noon on a Saturday and did not have a wait. Once seated, we were provided with hot tea, which was nice. We made our order, and it quickly arrived within about 5 minutes. We ordered the Shan Dong Chicken, the sesame noodles with the handmade noodles, and the special dumplings. The Shan Dong chicken is so good! You must try that when visiting here. Next time, we want to try the hot and spicy noodles, the sesame noodles wasn’t our favorite but was still decent. From reviews online it looks like that is the most popular noodle dish. The special dumplings are good, I like the filling. But, keep in mind it can be a lot of dough when pairing the special dumplings with the handmade noodles. Overall, we love stopping here whenever we are passing through Oakland.
We tried this place because of the crowd outside and figured the food was good! Table for 2 seated within 5 min on a December Friday night at 7pm! Lovely tea while waiting. Food arrived quickly and the portions were enormous! Any entree could easily be shared by multiple people! We ordered the Sweet and Sour Soup, Spicy Chow Mein with hand pulled noodles (sub chicken for shrimp) and Moo Shu Vegetables. I appreciated that they asked if we were comfortable with the meat in each of the dishes and were able to make substitutions. Everything Yum :) We ate as much as we could and still had to go boxes for everything. Great spot!
Spices 3 辣妹子
Absolutely delicious with a great selection of stinky tofu and other vegetarian dishes. Spice levels are pleasant and only enhance the flavor of all the dishes. NOTE: Cash only, so make sure to bring enough to cover all the good food!
Absolutely amazing food and amazing service. The portion size is great for 2-3 people per item. The time from ordering to eating is the fastest in the area. Highly Recommended, spices 3 will continue to get my service.
Oakland Cafe
Great server. Nice and friendly. Nice place with clean bathrooms. Great delicious food. Fair prices too. Comes with complimentary vegetable soup when you eat inside. Hot tea in real authentic cups with nice tea pot of fresh hot tea. I would recommend going here again because it gets all the stars.
Popular as ever, excellent food, very kind staff, reasonable prices, easy parking.
Becky's
We got the family dinner for 2, option A came with - wonton soup, spring rolls, sweet and sour pork, chicken fried rice, assorted veggies and sesame ball. They let us substitute the pork out for general tsos chicken which was great! We loved the soup, it was hearty and flavorful. Everything was obviously fresh and hot, and the servings were generous especially the fried rice. We were initially skeptical about the sesame ball dessert but it was delicious and we enjoyed it. Will definitely return!
When we were looking for dinner on College, on a MONDAY night, past 8pm, we found this gem! Becky's has a great relaxing environment, super friendly lady staff and great Chinese food. We ordered the King Pao tofu and also broccoli 🥦 dish, both were excellent. Would highly recommend Becky's.
Thanh Ky Restaurant
O boy, Oakland. It has gotten really bad since the late 90's when I took a few classes at Laney College. Thanh Ky is known for hu tieu, chieu chau dry noodles. I opted to go for their #47 House Special Crispy Noodles $15 instead. This was delicious. So good. I asked them to make it a bit drier with less sauce. My personal preference is a more crispy noodles. Too much gravy will ruin this dish. Service was excellent. They speak Cantonese as well as other languages. The kitchen was fast. I was in and out in 30 minutes. This was a great meal. Thank you everyone at Thanh Ky.
I have been coming to Thanh Ky for years and they never disappoint. They serve one of my favorite versions of salted fish and chicken fried rice. Their gravy egg over rice is delicious as well. Friendly reminder that they are cash only.
Holly's Mandarin
Food tasted great and prices were good too.
Ordered food to go: Crab cream cheese wontons= 8/10 flavor is fine. Very crispy. Looks like crab and cream cheese were blended together. Chow mein and chow fun = 9/10 great flavor. Lots of veggies. Meat soft. Not oily. Definitely worth it! honey walnut shrimp = 8/10 flavor is good, crunchy. Tastes fresh/Does not have that strong shrimpy taste BUT not enough sauce so I can still taste/feel the rice flour Crispy duck= 3/10 Not crispy. Meat was tough. It was really dry and the buns kept splitting in half. Sweet and sour pork= 4/10 sauce flavor was good BUT not crispy and way too much fat. Did not feel good after eating it
福林素食 Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro
I personally am not vegetarian, but came here with a Vegan friend so we could eat out together. We were both thoroughly impressed. I eat a lot of Chinese food and I really enjoyed all of the dishes. They all had depth of flavor and were distinctly different. I was especially happy with the green beans - this dish traditionally is made with minced pork but instead it’s got a bit of a twist with jalapeños. Sooo good and honestly better this way. Also loved the longevity tea. My vegan friend was really happy with the meal and said he’d be back for sure. The staff was attentive and very kind. Flexible and super knowledgeable of the menu.
Went with some friends so I got to try a bunch of things since it was served family style. We had a good time, liked everything, but our favorite dish was definitely the Veggie Crispy Noodles. The rest of our order was Hot and Sour Soup and Laughing Buddha Delight. I really liked the soup and if you’re vegan be sure to see if egg is included or not since many of the soups have egg flower broth or egg white broth. I do wish that there was a more even ratio of noodles to veggies. All of us had plenty of vegetables but would have liked more noodles. The cups of tea are HUGE. Sitting in the back patio is very comfortable
Saint Anna Coffee Shop
I stopped by this cute diner to get a coffee to go alongside my pastries items I picked up from a shop nearby. The drink options are limited and don’t expect to be able to customize your coffee. Trust me. You won’t regret getting the ice coffee here. The store owner was right when she said it is VERY good. It tastes similar to a Vietnamese ice coffee but better (milky, sweet, bold coffee aftertaste). The decor/branding could use improvement but with mom/pop shops like these; the expectation is you go in for the good food/drinks and be left alone. I enjoyed the simplicity of the mindset. Place accepts cash and Venmo. I am not sure about cards. Though with small shops like these I tend to give cash because of the service fees shops are charged for cards.
Authentic HK style breakfast for $10! what a deal! Friendly service from the aunties that can't beat the ambience Milk tea is on the weaker side though Cash Only!!!
