Cousin Cafe
Cousin Cafe showed up in my research while looking for a Hong Kong-style restaurant in Newark. I decided to try them out. I'm not disappointed! The food is what I expected and the service is better than most of the Chinese restaurants. The dining room is a little too crowded, but I can still enjoy the yummy food. I'm sure I will be back next time when I'm in the area.
A neighborhood HK style cafe. Service is great and the AC is strong. The beef brisket wide rice noodles is the best amongst 3 dishes that we ordered. The Hainanese chicken rice dish was very plain, rice lacks flavor. Same as the other vermicelli we ordered, not many ingredients and flavors but very generous with the vermicelli. Their ice HK milk tea on the other hand is pretty good.
Hu Din Ji Shanghai Bistro
(May 2024) We got the Shanghai pan fried pork bun (recommended by a friend), pickled cucumber, cooked duck soup with glass noodle & duck blood, and shanghai potsticker. Of course the Shanghai pan fried pork bun was really good. Everything was good except for cooked duck soup with glass noodle & duck blood because ended up not liking the soup's flavor or the blood. The cucumber was refreshing to the other salty dishes.
I had an amazing experience at this dim sum restaurant! The flavors were incredible—each piece of dim sum was a little morsel of joy that truly highlights the skill of the chefs. The stir-fried dishes were top-notch, with vibrant vegetables and perfectly cooked ingredients that brought everything to life. What really stood out was how clean and well-maintained the restaurant was; it felt really inviting and comfortable. If you’re craving some fantastic dim sum in a pleasant setting, this place is definitely worth a visit!
西關明記腸粉 Mingkee Newark
Good taste of the rice noodle roll, unbelievably just a young and good- looking boy makes it, that is awesome. The young waiter servers in patience and pro as well. Highly recommended this store.
Nice brunch after rain at Ming Kee. With Zha Liang 炸两, porridge, fish ball and braised chicken wing. Yummy! 🥂will definitely be back. Btw they have another outlet at Cupertino as well for those in San Jose instead of Fremont. Their food is not oily or salty at all.
Cloudland Rice Noodle
I ordered the single-cook rice noodles (小锅米线) instead of Yunnan rice noodle's claim to fame, 过桥米线 (house special rice noodles). The rice noodle's texture tasted slightly different from my memory but still feels good. Flavor is closer to Sichuan than Yunnan where the shop is supposed to originate from. But that suites me well. The owner recommends the house special for my next visit. And my next visit will be very soon! (I am willing to give 5 stars even though I only had one dish that is not house special. I will update if the house special disappoints.) Cloudland Rice Noodle has a small storefront, but is very visible in Cedar Center. I arrived shortly after 6pm on a weekend and got seated quickly. The owner says they had been here for 8 years although I felt that I had been in the mall more recently than that. Their interior decor is not elaborate, but very comfortable.
Regular rice noodle. It tastes ok but I don’t think it is exact authentic Yunnan rice noodle. We also tried the Yunnan local snack: fried milk curd. It is crispy and has abundant milk flavor and a little sourness to it. It is made of goat milk. Be sure that you are ok with goat milk before ordering. The last thing was chicken cooked in steam pot. Avoid this dish. It is extremely small and I don’t love the taste.
New Hwong Kok
Here's the review with the added information: "Great take out place for roasted duck and pork. My fav is duck roasted plate which came with rice and steamed cabbage. Loved the duck flavor. It's in the lions supermarket complex, just outside the supermarket. Not recommended for dining-in. It's a quick grab the food and take away."
This is one of those places to get your lunch. However, you’re better off doing a take out rather than dining in because of how bland the atmosphere is. Still boxes at the front. I remember dining here when I was a lot younger. Wasn’t really looking bad there at that time. The food was slimy and oily. I consider it below average tbh. It’s cheap at the bright side. I highly recommend going to other restaurants if you want to get better quality of duck and chicken.
