Grandma's Kitchen
We frequently visit Red Hot Wok next door but never ate here until recently. Our friends said it was their favorite restaurant hands down, so we tagged along with them. They’re from Hunan and so is my family, so I had high expectations which were let down. For protein, we got a duck, frog, and tofu dish. They all had the same flavor profile—salty and oily—and way too much filler, not enough protein. The frog dish probably only had one frog. The only dish we completely finished was the hot and spicy shredded potato. The dishes also came out really slowly, maybe 15 minutes between each one, to the point we thought they had forgotten. Patron bathroom was also out of order when we went, so you had to use the inside employee restroom. Bench seating has this built-in wall, making it a bit awkward if you have a belly or are less mobile. Small parking lot but plenty of street parking around. No wait on a Sunday night.
This is undoubtedly one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, and everything we order consistently exceeds expectations. The restaurant owner is super friendly, and the ambience is just great. I would definitely bring friends and coworkers here again.
